In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I am a husband, father, Marine Corps veteran, and personal injury trial lawyer from the Dallas area. I was born in Dallas, served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 2010 to 2013, and hold degrees from Southern Nazarene University and Pepperdine's law and business schools. I’ve spent most of my career in courtrooms across Texas representing everyday people against large insurance companies and corporations. I’m running for the Texas House to bring that same advocacy for honor and fairness to Austin on behalf of the families of District 112.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

As a trial lawyer, I have spent my career standing up for regular people against powerful insurance companies and corporations — and I want to bring that same fight to the Texas Legislature on behalf of District 112 families. My service in the Marine Corps taught me discipline, integrity and accountability. To me, honor means doing the right thing and backing up your words with action. These are the values I will carry with me to Austin.I am a solutions-over-partisanship candidate, and a longtime Democrat who emphasizes finding common ground. I believe I am a credible, common-sense alternative to my opponent in this race.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

•

Education (raising teacher pay, universal Pre-K)

•

Healthcare (expanding Medicaid access)

•

Workers' rights (raising the minimum wage to a livable wage)

•

Women's rights (ownership of reproductive healthcare decisions, voting access)

•

Small businesses (supporting them over large corporations, living wages/benefits)

•

Local control (opposing state preemption of local decisions)

•

Gun safety (common-sense measures alongside the right to bear arms)

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity and accountability top the list. An elected official should be willing to back up his or her words with actions. These are the values that were reinforced during my time in Marine Corps and that I live by today. In addition:

•

Service before self-interest — showing up for constituents rather than donors or party leadership

•

Being a fighter for regular people — drawing on his career as a trial lawyer representing everyday Texans against powerful insurance companies and corporations

•

Practical problem-solving over partisanship — a willingness to find common ground and get things done rather than score political points

•

Honesty with voters — telling people the truth even when it's not the easy answer

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To truly represent the voters of my district. That means sponsoring and voting for bills that will help the residents of my district, not big corporate lobby interests. To represent to me means to be held accountable. I will regularly hold town halls so that I am accountable to the people that voted for me.

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Zach Herbert. I’m a husband, father, Marine Corps veteran, and personal injury trial lawyer. For most of my career, I’ve stood in courtrooms across Texas fighting for everyday people against the biggest insurance companies and corporations. Before that, I wore the uniform of a United States Marine, where I learned discipline, duty, and that honor is more than a word—it’s a way of life. Today, I’m running for the Texas House to take that same fight for fairness to Austin.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

As a Theology major in college, I learned inclusiveness and compassion. I believe that all Texans deserve dignity, respect, inclusion, and equitable treatment. In law school, I learned how to stand up for the powerless. They aren’t listening to us in Austin. They aren’t listening to School Districts. They aren’t listening to city leaders. They aren’t listening to parents. They are only listening to big businesses and billionaires. We need a voice in Austin that is uniquely our voice, not a rubber stamp. In the Marines, I learned that true leadership is earned through example. I have lived in this District for over 10 years. I own a small business here, and all four of my children attend public schools here. The people of 112 need true representation down in Austin, someone who understands how hard it is to keep it all together at work, home and everywhere else.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about Education, making sure our kids are getting the best education they can, but fully funding our schools and paying our teachers a fair wage. I am passionate about Small Businesses, making sure that they are protected, and can afford to pay a living wage to their employees, and can afford to pay full benefits to all employees. I am passionate about Healthcare, expanding Medicaid to all Texans, an making sure no Texan is left without lifesaving care merely because they can't afford it.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Leadership. In the Marines I learned how to lead by example, with Honor. The most lasting ethos that I practice today is "Leaders eat Last." That means that the higher ranking Marines would ensure that in the line for food, they are making sure all the Marines eat before they do. That's how a leader in our government should act.

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

Averie Bishop

What is an accomplishment that you are proud of?

I'm proud of my marriage of over 20 years to my best friend and soulmate, Jennifer. We have had many adventures, and we are an amazing team.
