In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I'm Wes Peterson, a software engineer in East Lansing, and I am running because I want to offer real solutions to the problems we face as workers. Problems that don't get solved because the donors and leaders in the two-party system benefit from leaving them unaddressed.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Making life affordable means changing who profits from our basic needs. I support public utilities, housing cooperatives, and publicly built housing because they let us put affordability first. We should fund health care and child care directly instead of paying middlemen to decide what we can have. A full-time job should pay enough to live on, and people should have something left after the bills are paid.Working people need power at work and in government. I will fight to protect the right to organize, hold employers accountable for stealing wages, and help workers buy their workplaces when they come up for sale. I also support ranked choice voting and proportional representation so more political viewpoints can win representation. I am running with the Working Class Party because we need a party willing to challenge the people who benefit from keeping things as they are.Technology should give us more freedom and more time to live our lives, instead it is used to monitor and extract everything from us. This is because the rich and corporations control technology to serve their interests of amassing wealth and power. I want workers to share in the benefits of automation through shorter hours and better pay, and communities to have control over the technology being brought into their lives. We should get to decide how technology is used instead of having those decisions made for us by the bosses or surveillance companies that profit from it.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Technology policy is especially personal to me because I write software for a living. I know that people decide how technology is used, and right now its being used to spy on us, steal our data, and eventually take our wages. Those decisions are made to maximize profit, in spite of what is best for society, and politicians are lobbied to go along with it. I want to protect our say in how technology is used in our workplaces and communities, our privacy, and our right to own and repair what we buy
