In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am Wayne Woodfield, and I am proudly running to be your next State Senator in Senate District 21. I was born in Provo, raised in Mapleton, and currently live in Lehi. I have always been proud of our state's family values, our care for neighbors in need, the beauty of our mountains and national parks, and our strong educational tradition. Utah is a state that values individual freedom, civil rights, and limited, accountable government. We expect transparency, integrity, and civility from our elected leaders. In recent years, however, the legislature has too often fallen short of those expectations by putting partisan power ahead of principled leadership, pushing the limits of its constitutional authority, and reacting poorly when its power has been checked. I am running for the Senate to bring principled, intelligent leadership back to the legislature and to help return our state to the values that have made Utah a great place to live. I am focused on the issues that matter to Utahns, not petty partisan power struggles. Our two-party system has pushed our state and our nation toward division and hostility. I am running for the Utah State Senate to restore the values of integrity, civility, unity, and fair governance that have long defined Utah politics. I take the best ideas from across the political spectrum and reject the worst. I am mainstream — not extreme.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
While our two major parties are consumed with partisan warfare, fear-mongering, and divisiveness, I will work to bring Utah back to the politics of unity, civil dialog, integrity, transparency, and fair government. I was a precinct chair in the Republican Party 10 years ago, and am fluent in conservative principles. I will uphold those principles, but leave behind the extremes of our current political climate. I will embrace good ideas, regardless of whether they come from the left or the right. I will represent all of my constituents, not just those that voted for me. I will be mainstream, not extreme.I will bring intelligent leadership to the Utah Senate. I will use the best data, the best research, and the best science available to make practical and sensible decisions as a legislator. I will fight against misinformation in all its forms and lead with transparency to ensure that everyone understands clearly what they are signing or voting on. I will not allow fear or conspiracy theories to influence my thinking. I support vote-by-mail. I support institutions that ensure fairness where elected officials may have a conflict of interest, such as redistricting and ballot language for constitutional amendments. I will work to strengthen public trust in our government.I will seek understanding by listening to my constituents when voting on bills and crafting legislation. The best law is informed by the people who live with its consequences every day. A veteran teacher understands the realities of the classroom in ways I never will. Farmers understand the challenges of agriculture. Parents, healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, first responders, and countless others bring expertise that no elected official can gain from reading reports or sitting through committee hearings alone. Effective representation begins with recognizing that my constituents are not just the people I serve, they are also some of my most important teachers.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
The strongest predictor of a success in any community is its level of education, so education is very important to me. Affordable housing and water management are currently high priority issues for our state and cities to address. I am passionate about governance and government operations, especially in matters concerning ethics, independence, and transparency, and I am in favor of reforms such as reasonable term limits, campaign finance reform, and strengthening systemic checks and balances on our institutions of government to ensure that we are all operating with the right incentives.
