In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I am Veronica Garcia-Martinez, a dedicated educator, mother of three, and former small business owner of Tinez Tacos in DeKalb County. I have lived in this community since 2010 and have committed my life to supporting students and families through both my teaching and advocacy work. As a 5th-grade dual-language teacher, I focus on equity in education and creating opportunities for every child to thrive. I am also a passionate advocate for the immigrant community, working to ensure all families have access to resources and support. I am running for Illinois State Representative to bring practical, community-driven solutions to our schools and neighborhoods.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I am fighting for public education, ensuring that Illinois protects the rights of bilingual learners and students in special education programs. Every child deserves access to high-quality instruction, resources, and support that meet their unique needs. I am committed to strengthening dual-language programs, supporting teachers, and advocating for inclusive classrooms where all students can thrive academically and socially. Education is the foundation of opportunity, and I will fight to make sure no student is left behind.I am running to fight for affordability for working families. With rising taxes, utility bills, and housing costs, many families struggle to maintain their homes and meet basic needs. I am committed to finding practical solutions that keep families in their homes, reduce financial burdens, and ensure that hard-working community members can thrive. Everyone who contributes to our community deserves stability and security, and I will work to make sure Illinois supports families, protects their economic well-being, and creates opportunities for financial relief.I am running to protect and support immigrant households, recognizing their vital contributions to our communities and Illinois’ economy. Immigrant families work, pay taxes, and help sustain local businesses, yet they often face barriers to opportunity and inclusion. Their labor, dedication, and resilience strengthen our state, and policies must reflect their importance. I will fight to ensure every family is valued, protected, and able to fully participate in Illinois’ economic and civic life, because the success of our state depends on the success of all its residents.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about strengthening public education, protecting working families, and ensuring responsible government. I will fight to protect bilingual learners and students in special education while holding school districts accountable for how state funds are spent. Affordability is critical as families face rising taxes, utility bills, and housing costs. I also support immigrant households whose work sustains Illinois’ economy, and I will advocate for farmers and rural communities who are vital to our state’s future. My focus is fairness, opportunity, and fiscal responsibility.
