In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Toni Kornegay Vaughn, and I am a seventh-generation Alabamian, a graduate of Alabama public schools and a second-generation graduate of the University of Alabama, where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance.
I grew up in rural Alabama, surrounded by a family of educators who instilled in me a lifelong respect for education, service, integrity, and hard work. My father was both an educator and a veteran, and my grandmother taught in a three-room schoolhouse. Those influences shaped my belief in the importance of education and giving back to one’s community.
Professionally, I spent my career in the insurance claims industry, ultimately serving as a Senior Regional Vice President for the southeastern United States with a national independent adjusting company. I oversaw operations across 40 branch offices and received numerous professional awards at the local, state, regional, and national levels. My career taught me the importance of leadership, sound financial management, accountability and working with people from all walks of life.
My husband and I have lived in North Shelby County since 1980. I am the proud wife and daughter of veterans, the mother of two daughters and a third-generation University of Alabama family member. Our family has experienced both extraordinary accomplishments and profound loss, experiences that have deepened my compassion for others and my understanding of the challenges families face.
