Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am a Christian, a husband, a father of six, and a grandfather of two. I have lived in southern Illinois my whole life and I am very familiar with the issues that we face here in the 117th district.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Pro-lifePro-2nd amendmentPro-family
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about families. I believe that legislators should enact laws that defend, protect, and enhance family values, such as school choice, lower taxes, and laws to protect the unborn.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Besides Jesus, my biggest influence has been the prophet Elijah. He was not afraid to speak the truth, even if it cost him his life.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I keep my word. I do not I intentionally lie. I do not compromise my beliefs.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To vote in a way that does not offend one's conscience and most closely matches the will of the people one represents.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The Challenger explosion is the most significant that I can remember. I was 14 at the time.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was working on a furnace cleaner truck. I had it for most of junior high and high school.
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Bible. It's a life manual.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Great Adventure by Steven Curtis Chapman
Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
There are no differences, unfortunately, except the number of occupants. However, that is something I would work toward changing as we should have a legislature that more closely resembles the federal legislature.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No, I believe that can actually be (and has been) a detriment. We don't need career politicians. We need public servants.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Fixing the population decline, fixing the debt, and fixing our ethics.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The governor is the leader of the executive branch. His job is to enforce the will of the people, not to legislate it. Vetoes should be few and far between unless the legislature is corrupt.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes, but it should never dilute your own conscience. I will never trade votes or sponsor legislation I would not already support.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I look forward to serving the people of Illinois in many capacities and committees.
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
Again, I look forward to serving the people of Illinois in whatever capacity I can be of service.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
I am a huge fan of Reagan, as many are.
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
I will go and do whatever the Lord calls me to.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am extremely passionate about protecting the lives of unborn children. I am also greatly concerned about the fact that Illinois' residents are overtaxed and this is driving people out of our state.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Jesus Christ is my first and most important role model. After Him would be the prophet Elijah. Both appeared to be meek and mild, but both also stood strong for the things they knew were right.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
The Bible
Turning Toward Integrity by David Jeremiah
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity is the absolutely most important characteristic an elected official must have. Without it, no elected official can ever be trusted.
We must also be of high moral character, holding ourselves to higher standards than others hold us.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I revere the Lord Jesus Christ above all others. I go where He tells me to go and do what He tells me to do. I am a man of integrity. My actions and words in private are the same as those in public. I am closely connected with the people of southern Illinois. I am a family man and will make decisions that benefit families in my district.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
It is the responsibility of all elected representatives to represent the values of their constituents. Therefore, it is also important for elected officials to remain connected to their districts, so that they can properly relay the beliefs and core values of their constituents.
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would hope that I inspire others to be true to what they believe and to trust the Lord God with their whole hearts.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The first major event that I can remember was when the space shuttle Challenger exploded. I was 15 and we watched the launch at the video arcade in town. Everyone was devastated.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My very first job was working on the furnace cleaner truck for the family heating and air business. I worked it summers while going to school.
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Bible because it is our only life manual.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Neo from the Matrix
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
The Great Adventure by Steven Curtis Chapman
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Sometimes it has been a struggle to continue to trust God and not put my own hands on the things He has promised. But over time, I have learned that while I may get there through my own power, it will not be the same as it would be if I trusted Him completely.
Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
Unfortunately, there are no differences in Illinois, except that the General Assembly has twice as many members as the Senate. This is something I would like to see changed.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No, quite the opposite. Too many state legislators - particularly in Illinois - have been there for way too long and need to be removed from office. Two terms should be the limit.
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
At this point, even if we overturn all of the new taxes, Illinois will still face an uphill battle on the road to economic recovery. Bit there is hope, if we tighten our belts and get to work now.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The governor should be a leader for the state by encouraging legislation designed to help grow the state - the whole state - by working with legislators from all districts, not just those from Cook County.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes, absolutely. However, I do not believe in compromising one's principles just to say you got something done for the purpose of re-election.
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I believe that I would have a lot to contribute to many committees and hope to have that opportunity.
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I would love to get involved with generating interest in others to run for office within the Republican party.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Not specifically.
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
I'm willing to do whatever and go wherever God wants me to.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
A lot of my fellow residents have similar stories to my own. They have lived here their whole lives, many living on property their grandparents homesteaded many years ago. However, one particular elderly gentleman told me that he was the one who homesteaded and built the home where he currently resides. He told me a lot about how much the area has changed, some for the better and some for the worse. He illustrated the very essence of our district and showed me yet another reason why I am running for office.
