Mathern earned his B.A. in sociology from North Dakota State University in 1971, his M.S.W. from the University of Nebraska in 1980, and his M.P.A. from Harvard University in 2000. His professional experience includes working as a child welfare caseworker, as the supervisor of social services with Catholic Family Service and as the director of public policy for Prairie Saint John's.[1]
