Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Thomas was born and raised in Falmouth, Massachusetts. After earning the rank of Eagle Scout and graduating from Falmouth High School as class president, Thomas attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where he studied Science, Technology, and International Affairs. During this time, Thomas also worked in the offices of Congressman Jim McGovern of Worcester and State Representative Tim Madden of Nantucket. After returning home to Massachusetts, he paid his own way in the evening division at Suffolk Law School while working full-time for the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

Following a campaign in the 2020 special primary election for State Senate in the Plymouth and Barnstable District, Thomas passed the bar exam and began work as an Assistant District Attorney for the Cape and Islands. Thomas spent most of him time with the office as the prosecutor responsible for handling cases in the Martha’s Vineyard Juvenile Court and the Edgartown District Court. Thomas worked alongside District Attorney Robert Galibois to lay the groundwork for Martha’s Vineyard’s first recovery court, which will address the root cause of repeat offenders with addiction as part of a wholistic approach to public safety.

Public service has always been a central aspect of Thomas’ life. His experiences along the way have reaffirmed his belief that any problem can be solved when a passionate community comes together.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Climate change is not only a political and moral crisis, it is also an economic crisis that is already threatening the Cape and Islands. While disaster relief is essential, we must also be proactive about how we interact with our environment. We need to protect our coastlines from further losses, conserve our wetlands, and promote sustainable practices at every level. The rapidly rising cost of living has made it difficult for many people to remain in the towns they have worked in and loved for years. Communities that embrace their low and middle income residents rather than driving them out are always better and more vibrant for it. We need to make sure that such families are able to have a home here, continuing to being a part of our community and strengthening the workforce of the area.My peers are dying, and we’re not doing enough to stop it. We need to end the stigma, treating addiction as the disease it is rather than a personal failing. We need to make sure availability and cost are not deterring factors when people are looking for the help they need. We need to stop the trafficking of fentanyl, rethink best practices for prescription pain-killers, and provide first responders with the life-saving resources they need.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Climate change, affordable housing, the opioid epidemic, and reproductive freedom are not only issues critical to the future of the Cape and Islands, but also problems that disproportionately impact my age group. It's time for the next generation to get involved in government and advocate for the future we want. As a lifelong Democrat, I believe that the fundamental mission of government is to ensure each citizen has equal access to the resources necessary for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” promoting those projects for the common good that private enterprise alone cannot accomplish.
