In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Thomas Loveheart. I’m a Cedar City resident, worker, Christian, & homeowner who chose to build my life in Utah. Utah's future is my own & I care deeply about protecting the natural beauty, communities, & opportunity that make it special. But like many of us, I worry about the direction we're headed.
Housing is unaffordable. Healthcare costs keep rising. Wages aren't keeping pace with the cost of living. Climate change is threatening our water & wilderness. At the same time, our legislature actively overrides the will of the people, rewriting ballot initiatives, protecting special interests, & passing laws that hurt working families. And they do it without repercussion.
I’m running as a Democrat to offer Utahns a real choice in who represents them, but I’m not your typical Democrat. Both the GOP & Democrats have failed working people for decades.
As a state employee working with incarcerated youth, I’ve seen firsthand how poverty & instability destroys communities. My background in sociology & public service has shaped my belief that strong communities require affordable housing, accessible healthcare, good-paying jobs & government for regular people, not just donors.
We can reelect the status-quo & expect more of the same corporate-captured politicians & hardship for everyone else. Or you can elect someone who has nothing to gain from protecting a rigged system & everything to gain from fixing it.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Affordable Housing
Housing should be a place to live, not a financial instrument for corporations and out-of-state investors. Across Utah, families are being priced out of the communities they grew up in as wages lag behind skyrocketing rents and home prices. When teachers, tradespeople, and young families can’t afford to live in the communities they serve, things begin to break.
I support expanding deeply affordable, publicly owned social housing projects across the state with rents tied to income, and cracking down on speculative practices that drive up costs. Utahns deserve stable, affordable homes near their jobs and families, not a market rigged by political insiders with deep ties to the development industry.Affordable Healthcare
Healthcare costs are crushing working families across Utah. Too many people delay care, ration medication, or go into debt simply for trying to stay healthy. Utah voters chose to expand Medicaid in 2018, but our corporate-bought legislature rescinded many of the key aspects of Prop 3 in blatant disregard for the will of the people. I will fight to expand access to affordable, high-quality healthcare, lower prescription drug prices, and protect public health programs that keep rural and low-income communities alive. No one should have to choose between paying rent and seeing a doctor. Our system should put patients before profits.Power to the People, Not Corporations
Utah’s legislature does not reflect the people it governs. Despite a growing number of independent and unaffiliated voters, power is concentrated in a small, ideological, corporate-aligned political class that routinely undermines voter-passed ballot initiatives, expands their own power, and shields itself from accountability. I will defend democracy, protect the initiative process, oppose gerrymandering, support election reform, and reject corporate influence in state government. Utahns deserve representatives who answer to voters. Not lobbyists, donors, or special interests. Too many of our politicians have forgotten they exist to serve, not to rule.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I’m most passionate about policies that strengthen working-class families and restore balance to our democracy. That means making housing, healthcare, and education affordable again; raising wages; and ensuring full-time work provides real stability. I’m deeply concerned about climate change and its impact on Utah’s water, air quality, public lands, and long-term economic future. We need practical solutions that protect both our environment and our communities. And underlying all of it is the need to combat the corporate subversion of our democracy so that public policy once again reflects the will of the people, not simply the sick priorities of endlessly power-hungry globalist billionaire pedophiles.
