In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Tarik Alan Barnes. I may not have been born in Nevada (Riverside, California actually) but Las Vegas, Nevada is where I've grown up since my family moved us out here when I was around 4 months old. I've had a multitude of different jobs, from sanitation, to machine technician, pool cleaner, to Online Banking specialist, among others. I am currently a sales rep for a beverage company, and I enjoy my job. I am the father of 3 little babies, 2 beautiful twin daughters, and 1 awesome son. When my wife, Bernice and I first got pregnant, we had some complications with our pregnancy, where we ended up losing one of our daughters. Bittersweet, we pushed on with everything, and now we are living in North Las Vegas! After living around the East Side, I've brought my family to live around the area that I grew up in. We love it up here, and are very excited to see/meet the various people that I could one day be representing. Hope to see and speak with you soon!

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I believe that corporate investors are a problem within Las Vegas. Buying up single family homes, stealing opportunities from young couples or people that just want to buy a house, settle down, make it their own. They no longer have a viable opportunity to do that, not with the prices, not with the wages. I would be fighting to ban investors from being able to buy up all the newly built houses, saving some for the rest of us.For the longest time, I was told that Nevada sat near the bottom when it came to education here in the valley. I want to fix that, because I am embarrassed of that for us. I want better education for our youth, and for those wanting to continue education, and for the people who make it all happen- the teachers. I personally don't have a "plan" on how to fix the public schooling system. But I do know that one problem we are facing is the lack of public trust in our schools. I want to better the education system, to a point where parents trust the public schooling that Nevada has to offer.I want a better quality of life for the people of this beautiful Silver State. I want to see the possibility of no property taxes after you pay off your mortgage. I want to see lower auto insurance rates, maybe bringing more competition in. I want to see better jobs, different jobs for the people of Las Vegas, not just the hospitality/service work that we experience with these casinos. Maybe brining some manufacturing jobs into Nevada. Ultimately I want to see better, because I get it. I'm in this trench with a lot of people, and I want out. I would absolutely fight for the betterment of the people that make this State, the entertainment capital of the U.S.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Public Housing, Public Education, and Quality of Life. If it's policy that improves the lives of the people, and not the interests of the higher upper class, I want it.

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

So far, nobody. And I'm fine with that. I want to represent the people of District 1, and will represent them to the best of my ability, with or without endorsements.
