Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Sydnie Hutchinson and I am running for NC House of Representatives District 108. I am from the great state of North Carolina and have made my home in Gaston County, NC. I have previously lived in South Carolina, Arizona and Indiana before returning home to NC. I graduated from Highland High School in Gilbert, AZ in 2010. I earned my associates of applied science in paralegal studies from Ivy Tech Community College in 2014. I have worked as a paralegal since 2014 in the areas of personal injury law, wrongful death law, family law and workers compensation. I am a servant to my community and I always try to help people when they are in their greatest need. Throughout my career I have seen first hand the negative effects of how harmful legislation can impact my community. I have also worked a variety of service industry jobs such as bartending, serving and management.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I will work to address the affordability crisis in housing and daily living in Gaston County. North Carolina's economy is thriving but the workers are not benefiting from this due to bad legislation and policies. We must focus on growing Gaston County's economy where the workers are elevated and thriving.I will work to invest in our public education system. We must invest in our teachers and youth. North Carolina currently ranks 46th in the U.S. for teacher starting pay and 49th in the U.S. for what we invest in our public education. This is unacceptable. We have to fund our public education system. Every student deserves to have a quality and equitable education.I will work to get North Carolinian's access to quality affordable healthcare. I will fight government overreach, particularly where it concerns women's reproductive healthcare and the expansion of the legislature's power.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

We have an affordability crisis when it comes to all areas of daily living. People should not have to choose between food, medical care and housing costs. I will work hard to fight for policies that address this crisis. Our citizens need to be able to have quality access to medical care. I have seen personally the financial hardships, lack of care and inequity people face in our healthcare system. Medical care should not be a privilege to those who can afford it but a basic right.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

My grandfather was the one that inspired me and drove my passion for helping others. He was a member of the United States Air Force and served in the Korean War. He was also the local mayor of the Town of Marvin. He lived his life with empathy, kindness, hard work and his desire to help others. He inspired me to lead a life of service to help others and make an impact on my community.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

They must listen and meet with the constituents that they represent. Always putting what is best for your constituents and district first, over your own. Honesty, Integrity and Empathy are a must.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

I am a servant leader dedicated to working in the best interest of the residents of District 108 without bias. This is my home and I have a vested interest in the well being of the residents of Gaston County. I love working with people and learning from their experiences. I am passionate and driven to make a difference in my community.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

I believe that people should have a government that works for them, not a government that ignores their needs. I will listen to the people of my district to enact legislation and policies that directly benefits them.

What legacy would you like to leave?

The legacy I would like to leave is that I helped my friends, family and neighbors by advocating for reforms that will make their lives better.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

9/11 This had a major impact on my life at 9 years old. I can remember everything about that day and knowing how much the world would change after this.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I worked at a Irish Sports Pub in high school as a hostess and server. I worked there for 2 years until I moved to Indiana.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Africa-Toto

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I know what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck. I know what it is like to have to choose between food, gas or obtaining my medication I need. I understand the struggles of being able to find affordable housing. I have worked two jobs while also going to college. I understand the everyday struggles that people experience because I am experiencing them myself.

What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?

Affordable housing and daily living cost. The climate crisis. Quality access to healthcare.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

Yes

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
