In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am Steve Wicklund, Village President of Union Grove, Chair of the Racine County Intergovernmental Cooperation Council, and owner of BSW Electric, a Union Grove electrical contracting company that employs 11 people. I came up through the trades, not through politics. Since 2021 I have led our village with balanced budgets, responsible growth, and respect for the taxpayers who fund it all. My wife Cindy and I have been married 20 years and raised our three sons here. I am running for the Wisconsin State Assembly in District 33 because Madison should work for the people, not control them.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Proven local leadership. I have been elected Village President three times and governed the way conservatives should: balanced budgets, careful infrastructure planning, and standing up for local taxpayers against unfunded mandates from Madison. I do not just talk about fiscal responsibility. I have practiced it line by line, budget by budget, vote by vote.I have signed the front of paychecks. As a small business owner who built an electrical contracting company from the ground up, I know what rising costs do to a payroll and what overregulation does to working families and job creators. I bring real-world accountability to every policy decision because I have lived on the other side of the regulations.Defending the values that built this district: limited government, lower taxes, strong public safety, protection of our constitutional rights, and local control. Those are the principles I have governed by in Union Grove, and they are the principles I will fight for in Madison on behalf of the people of Racine and Walworth Counties.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Fiscal policy and local control are where I have spent my public life. I am passionate about protecting taxpayers, keeping budgets balanced, and stopping Madison from pushing unfunded mandates onto local communities and then keeping the money that belongs to them. As a tradesman and small business owner, I care deeply about workforce development, cutting the regulations that strangle job creators, and expanding apprenticeships and technical education so young people can build good careers without four-year debt. My son is an electrical apprentice, and my wife teaches at Gateway Technical College, so this is personal for our family. I am also committed to strong public safety and defending our constitutional rights.
