In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Steve Patten is a small business owner, writer, and longtime Carroll County resident running for Maryland State Delegate in District 42C. He has spent decades working with local businesses and community organizations and believes government closest to the people governs best.
Steve is running to advocate for fiscal responsibility, local autonomy, affordable energy policies, and greater accountability in Annapolis while ensuring the voices and values of Carroll County are represented.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
I believe government closest to the people governs best. Carroll County communities should not be subjected to one-size-fits-all mandates from Annapolis that ignore local needs, values, and priorities. I am running to ensure the voices of District 42C residents are heard and represented in state government.Maryland must restore fiscal discipline and accountability. Taxpayers deserve transparency in how their money is spent, stronger oversight of taxpayer-funded programs, and policies that prioritize results over bureaucracy. I will advocate for responsible budgeting, government accountability, and policies that keep Maryland affordable for families and small businesses.Rising energy costs, infrastructure pressures, and affordability concerns are affecting families across Maryland. I support balanced energy policies that prioritize reliability, affordability, and responsible planning while protecting local communities, farmland, and quality of life. Maryland should pursue practical solutions that strengthen both our economy and our communities.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about policies that strengthen local communities, protect individual liberty, and ensure government remains accountable to the people it serves. I believe decisions are often best made closest to the community level rather than through one-size-fits-all mandates from Annapolis.
I am also deeply concerned about affordability issues facing Maryland families, particularly rising energy costs and unsustainable government spending. As a small business owner and writer who has worked closely with local businesses and community organizations for decades, I care deeply about preserving opportunities for families, farmers, and small businesses to thrive in Maryland.
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
My campaign has been endorsed by numerous elected officials, community leaders, and organizations across Maryland, including Maryland State Senator Chris West, Sheriff Jim DeWees, Carroll County State’s Attorney Haven Shoemaker, Delegates Nino Mangione, Mark Fisher, Chris Tomlinson, and outgoing District 42C Delegate Josh Stonko. I have also received endorsements from Carroll County Commissioners Kenny Kiler and Michael Guerin, the Maryland Farm Bureau, and the Maryland Freedom Caucus.
