The owner and brewer of Alcatraz Brewing has announced his run for Congress. Steve Morgan, a long-term resident of Palm Coast, has set his sights on the local congressional seat in the House of Representatives in Washington DC. This is Morgan’s first ever run for office, with the primary set for August 18 and the general election on November 3.
Morgan is running as a fiscally conservative Democrat to succeed Randy Fine, who is the Republican incumbent.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Fiscal conservative means a balanced budget and deficit reduction. “Sometimes you should look back to look ahead,” Morgan says, referencing the Clinton Administration and the fiscally conservative Congress at the time that passed net budget surpluses for that 8-year period. “We need another Balanced Budget Act, and we need another Deficit Reduction Act. Our National Debt is now $109,000 per person and it is time to throw away the “credit card” and start paying down what we owe.”Affordability is a top concern for many in District 6, and Morgan has several proposals that he will support in DC. “We must reinstate the heath care subsidies and Medicare spending and SNAP benefits that have been reduced in the past year. And we need to stop unnecessary tariffs that only increase prices and contribute to our growing inflation.” To afford that, Morgan supports higher tax rates for corporations, which are now taxed at historically low rates. “While Main Street suffers, Wall Street is having record profits and posted a record Dow index. We need to find that middle ground where the economy is strong and yet we don’t have a shrinking middle class and a desperate lower-middle class.”Another key part of Morgan's platform is Respect. Morgan proposes that we as individuals and as a society should show more respect to those who work for us – whether they be police officers or firefighters or public-school teachers. “My father used to say that if you respect the people that you work and associate with, they will show more respect to the people in their lives and those they encounter. As a result, the benefit of being treated with respect is magnified and keeps passing forward!” Respect also means that voters be respected by the public servants and congressional representatives they elect. That would mean having an elected representative actually live and work in District 6.

The Wrong War in the Wrong Place at the Wrong Time:
At the start of the 20th century Great Britain was 25% of global GDP, similar to the US today. Over the course of the next 25 years they sent troops to Sudan, Somalia, Iraq, and Jordan. Sound familiar? In 1920 they had 120,000 troops in Iraq. Today their GDP is a minor fraction of ours.
We have known that the Straight of Hormuz was a chokepoint for more than 100 years. I learned its significance as a Political Science major at Duke University decades ago.
We have now spent $25B on this war in Iran. That is enough money to fund the ACA Health Care subsidies for another year. We are making all the Wrong Choices!
Great powers often succumb to small wars. Let's not be one of them.
