In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in North Dakota, graduated from the University of North Dakota and University of Manitoba, worked for the State of North Dakota for 16 years and the U.S. Department of the Interior for 25 years in North Dakota and Colorado. Before I retired from federal service, I served as the Area Manager of Eastern Colorado Area Office, where I was responsible for management, development, and protection of critical water, land, and environmental resources.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Why do I want to represent District 33 in the North Dakota legislature? During the January special session, my opponent Senator Keith Boehm voted against the free school lunch bill. The reason he said in the January 29 issue of the Hazen Star, "No child goes hungry in North Dakota." That was the last straw for me. Most North Dakotans, 82% according to the latest poll, support free school lunch, yet he voted to kill the bill. In fact, 1in 7 children in North Dakota face hunger - 24,510 children in our state don't have enough food.I am increasingly concerned about unaffordable health care premiums, rural access to quality health care, viability of small town grocery stores, and the need for local control over construction of new data centers. We need legislators who listen to their constituents and represent their wishes. A legislature dominated by one party is unchecked and immoderate. My career dedicated to balancing infrastructure development with resource conservation is a perfect fit for the North Dakota State Senate.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Protection of our rural way of life is important. Economic development must be balanced with preservation of natural resources and our quality of life. We need government transparency, affordability, and fiscal responsibility.
