In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am Shery Olivo, a Dominican-American community advocate, author, wife, and mother running for the New York State Assembly in the 86th District. My decision to seek public office was driven by both personal tragedy and a deep concern for the future of our community.
The loss of my nephew, Juan Peña, was a heartbreaking reminder of the challenges too many families in the Bronx face every day. That tragedy strengthened my commitment to public service and inspired me to become a voice for those who feel unheard by government.
I am running because I believe our neighborhoods deserve safer streets, better schools, greater economic opportunity, and leaders who are accountable to the people they serve. Working families are struggling with rising costs, public safety concerns, and a government that often seems disconnected from their daily realities.
I want to bring a fresh perspective to Albany one that is rooted in the values of hard work, family, and community. My goal is to listen to residents, advocate for practical solutions, and deliver real results that improve the quality of life for the people of the Bronx.
Together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future for our community.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Public safety is my top priority because every resident deserves to feel safe in their home, on their street, and in their neighborhood. Too many Bronx families are concerned about crime, violence, and quality-of-life issues. I support providing law enforcement with the resources they need to keep our communities safe while ensuring accountability and professionalism. I will advocate for policies that reduce crime, support victims, address repeat offenders, and make our neighborhoods safer for families, seniors, and small businesses.Every child deserves access to a quality education that prepares them for success in life. I believe parents should be active partners in their children's education and have a strong voice in the decisions that affect their families. I support raising academic standards, improving literacy and math proficiency, expanding educational opportunities, and ensuring schools focus on student achievement. Our education system should equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue higher education, vocational training, or meaningful careers. The rising cost of living is making it increasingly difficult for working families to get ahead. Families are struggling with higher prices for groceries, housing, utilities, and everyday necessities. I will fight for policies that help reduce the financial burden on residents, support small businesses, encourage job creation, and promote economic growth. Government should create opportunities for people to succeed, not make it harder for them to achieve their goals. My focus is on helping families keep more of what they earn and build a more secure future.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am most passionate about public safety, education, economic opportunity, and government accountability.
Public safety is personal to me because no family should have to live in fear or experience the pain caused by violence. I believe safe communities are the foundation of a strong society.
As a mother, I care deeply about education and ensuring parents have a meaningful role in their children's future. Every child deserves access to a quality education that prepares them for success.
I am also passionate about lowering the cost of living and helping working families get ahead. Government should work for the people, be transparent, and focus on delivering results that improve everyday life.
