Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Shawn Kessel is a proven leader with nearly 25 years of experience strengthening North Dakota communities. A small business owner with experience in both the public and private sectors, Shawn built a career around service, problem-solving, and steady leadership.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
As the former Deputy Commerce Commissioner for the State of North Dakota economic development with a focus on diversifying the ND economy and creating high paying jobs is a priority while keeping taxes low.As a former city administrator in a very fast growing city smart growth is a high priority. Special assessments, property taxes and other incentives have a place but they must be directed, evaluated and reviewed regularly.My wife, Lori, and I are foster parents which has impressed upon us the value of strong families and support network that help disadvantaged children succeed.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am running because I have led a blessed life in North Dakota and I want to give back. I have been around the political system for over 25 years. I have testified in front of numerous legislative bodies, created budget plans approved by the executive and legislative branches so I can hit the ground running.
