In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

As daughters of a firefighter and a school cafeteria worker, my sisters and I grew up in a working class neighborhood. It was from my family and those early experiences that I learned the value of hard work, the importance of service to our community, and to cherish relationships.

For 25 years, I have lived in Amherst, NH. My husband and I raised our family here and we are deeply rooted in the community.

I have previously served as a state representative and a state senator. I held key leadership roles, including Chair of the Committee on Resources, Recreation, and Development, where I worked to protect New Hampshire’s natural resources and strengthen our economy. I also served as Ranking Member on the Committee on Criminal Justice and Public Safety. In the State Senate, I served on the Judiciary, Health and Human Services, Executive Departments and Administration, and Commerce committees, as well as the Joint Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules, in addition to appointments on various committees and commissions, including the Governor’s Task Force on Reopening.

I believe in the value of strong communities and have always put service first. I have been a member of the Amherst Town Ways and Means Committee and served on the boards of SHARE Outreach, the Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence, and the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains.

I enjoy art, antiques, quilting, and rooting for New England sports teams, most passionately for the Boston Bruins.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

People are struggling. The cost of housing, childcare, groceries, gas, health care, property taxes and utilities are well beyond what many folks can bear. I am running because I want to put working families first. This means easing the burden of property taxes and ensuring that the state fulfills its obligations to municipalities. The health of our economy is dependent upon young families being able to put down roots and seniors being able to retire with stability. This means investing in accessible, affordable childcare, encouraging smart and strategic housing growth and committing to high quality public education for all children. It means building communities where we can thrive, not just survive.Access to clean water should not be simply a possibility; it should be a guarantee. I have worked hard to pass meaningful legislation to keep our environment free from PFAS “forever chemicals,” and to clean up the existing contamination in our air, soil, and water. Unfortunately, recent action from federal agencies is once again threatening the protections we have in place. I am committed to securing the guardrails we have that are designed to keep our families safe and healthy and to continuing to follow the science and best practices.Effective and popular government policy does not happen in a vacuum. It requires the input, trust, and consent of the people. To that end, I am committed to strengthening our democracy. When I served in Concord, I led efforts to pass bipartisan legislation to establish an independent redistricting commission to eliminate gerrymandering and ensure maps were drawn fairly. We want voters choosing their elected officials not elected officials choosing their voters. Unfortunately, the governor vetoed this crucial and popular measure. I am undeterred. I will continue to work to pass measures aimed at fairness, transparency and accountability in our elections and state government. Our democracy is sacred and to be valued, championed and secured.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

As described above, I am concerned about the many issues facing our state. I am, however, truly passionate about being responsive to my constituents. I am committed to serving the people of my community, to be their voice in Concord. My priorities come from the many conversations I have with voters in our community. It is important to me that every resident has the opportunity to come to me with their concerns. I am focused on creating and passing meaningful and balanced legislation that reflects the concerns and priorities of our community.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I am committed to listening to my constituents and representing our shared interests and values. I will work with all to preserve our wonderful resources and meet the challenges facing our state. I will champion efforts to achieve the best quality of life for New Hampshire families including creating a vibrant economy, supporting our public schools and maintaining public safety while ensuring that our hard earned tax dollars are spent wisely.I am committed to ensuring that NH families have clean, safe drinking water. I have worked to reduce PFAS and other contaminants in drinking and groundwater, to provide funding sources for remediation and to require insurance coverage for PFAS and PFC testing. In addition, I have advocated for medical monitoring for those exposed to PFAS and other toxic chemicals and for comprehensive environmental management.COVID-19 has created and revealed a host of challenges. We must support the the fair, transparent and rapid distribution of federal COVID-19 recovery funds and work to safely reopen our economy. Additionally, we must prepare for the longer lasting effects on our people, including jobs, education, physical and mental health services and housing.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about issues of equality, equity, justice and safety. I am dedicated to environmental protection and renewable energy, to good government of the people, to education and opportunity for all. I believe in finding solutions, building consensus and working across the aisle as well as with all stakeholders on a given issue.
