State House
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Hi! My name is Serenity Hope Salak and I want to be your next House District 93 Representative.
I am a mother, caseworker and teacher. I am married to Brandon, who has worked in manufacturing for over 20 years. I have a daughter (Nadia, 15) and a son (Christian, 9).
I grew up on the edge of the 93rd in a trailer park. Against all odds, I went to Michigan State University. I graduated with a bachelor's degree in political science. Later, I would earn a Masters of Public Administration. I was on my way to law school with a half tuition scholarship, when the Lord had other plans. I welcomed Nadia 9 months later.
I now call Saginaw Township home. I believe in the American Dream because I live it every day. I want those same opportunities for every Michigander.
I have spent 25 of my 40 years as a resident of this district. I have seen the world. I could raise my family anywhere but I keep choosing the 93rd.
I want to serve because I believe that people are our greatest resource. I want my children and yours to choose the 93rd.
To keep my (future) grand-kids and yours here, we need to ensure the 93rd is family-friendly, supportive to small business and offers equal opportunities to everyone--regardless of whether their home has wheels or not.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Families need affordable childcare when and where they need it.
This means changing the way we fund schools so that Seniors and those on fixed incomes are not burdened by continual property tax millages to fix crumbling educational infrastructure.
This means offering a public child care option before and after school in every elementary school.
This means making free breakfast and lunch permanent lines in our state budget as well as adding options for evening meals.
We cannot ask parents to choose between earning a living and making a life.
Parents deserve to know their child is being fed and read to when they aren't there to do it themselves.Healthcare is a human right.
If you can't pay, you can still get medical care. Regardless of your ability to pay, you have the right to life-saving care.
Why then do we stop caring for the patient once their vitals have stabilized? Why are we not trying to prevent the need for life-saving care? Wouldn't this be a better use of our resources?
When elected, I will support MiCare--this is a bill currently sitting in committee. It provides for a single-payer health care system state-wide paid for through payroll taxes.
Imagine walking in to your clinic, talking to your doctor, leaving with a treatment plan and not having to worry about a surprise bill coming in the mail. No pre-authorizations. No co-insurance. No premiums.Get money out of politics.
The only people who should get a say in how you vote is you and your God. But somewhere along the way, corporations became people and Citizens United destroyed "the local election". Money from out-of-state donors, corporations and CEO's are influencing even the most local elections.
That same out-of-state donor, corporation or CEO is who your elected official is beholden to--not you.
My promise to you is that I will answer to the people of the 93rd--and not just those who voted for me.
I do not take money from DTE, Consumers or any corporate PAC. I never have. Dark money has no place in elections.
I will support legislation that keeps our elections free and fair.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
We must make childcare free and accessible to all Michigan residents. Childcare is economic infrastructure.
When we invest in working class families, Michigan's economy thrives! We must get private interests out of our public goods--our infrastructure, our healthcare system, and our elections.
Michiganders should not be charged a toll on a bridge that their grandparents' tax dollars paid to build.
Health Insurance companies should not decide which treatments are best for you--you and your doctor should.
Big donors and dark money are gate-keeping democracy. We need to get money out of politics. All people are entitled to dignity and self-determination.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Economic Equality, Civil Rights, Social Welfare
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
I do not seek out endorsements.
