Campaign websiteMcCann's campaign website stated the following:Keeping Costs Low and Tackling the Affordability CrisisWith every day that passes, it doesn’t just feel like it’s getting harder to get by; it actually is getting harder for people.Backbreaking tariffs are making all aspects of life more expensive—grocery and gas prices are skyrocketing, utility bills are doubling, and housing costs are higher than ever. It’s a never-ending assault on families’ pocketbooks, yet corporations and billionaires seem to get richer while Congress gives them handouts. In the Michigan Senate, I’ve taken steps to ease the tax burden for regular folks and try to make life a little more affordable—and I’ll work to do the same for you in Congress. My number one priority will be lowering everyday costs while protecting and creating good-paying jobs right here in Southwest Michigan. From utilities to prescription drugs to housing—I’ll make sure Congress gets its act together to make life more affordable for working families.Protecting Our Health CareI hear from too many families who are skipping medical exams and appointments and rationing medicine they need because they simply can’t afford health care. That’s why one of my proudest votes in the Michigan Legislature was to expand access to Medicaid to over a million people in Michigan, making it possible for more families to have real, quality health care. But in Washington, Bill Huizenga and Donald Trump’s Medicaid cuts have ripped away health care from hundreds of thousands of people in Michigan, including more than 160,000 people on Medicaid and 14,000 people who rely on the Affordable Care Act right here in Michigan’s 4th Congressional District, while also jeopardizing our rural hospitals. In Congress, we need to put people ahead of profits. I will fight to: Extend the ACA tax credits and reduce the cost of health care.Lower prescription drug costs and hold Big Pharma accountable for price gouging. Strengthen access to care across our district—in both our rural and urban communities.Addressing Energy CostsThe United States can be a leader in the growing domestic energy economy—we should be building energy infrastructure here at home so we don’t have to rely on foreign oil or foreign energy. And we’ll create good-paying energy jobs while we’re at it. Trump’s decision to force aging coal plants to stay open, including one in Holland, Michigan, months after it was due to close, is damaging our environment and raising energy costs for people in Michigan and beyond. Solar, wind, and nuclear energy here in Michigan will help us support US energy independence, reduce pollution, and create good-paying jobs in our community. In the Michigan Senate, I supported funding to help reopen the Palisades Nuclear Plant to help us move towards a clean energy future. We need solutions that reduce costs for Michigan families—not aging coal and natural gas plants that make energy more expensive for ratepayers.Protecting Our Water, Air and LandHere in Michigan, we understand the value of clean water. The Great Lakes are a national treasure and central to our way of life here. We also know all too painfully what happens when you don’t take care of the water, as we’ve seen with the lead water crises in Benton Harbor and Flint. No one should have to worry about the safety of the water they drink. We need to protect the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the beauty of Michigan for all our kids and grandkids.Safeguarding Our Constitution and DemocracyNow more than ever, it is vital that we stand up for our democratic ideals, our Constitution, and our freedoms. Freedom of speech is a pillar of our country and the foundation of our electoral process. That’s why I’ve stood up for free and fair elections. I pushed forward independent redistricting efforts and will always fight against extremist attempts to undermine our elections. In Congress, I will continue to use my voice, alongside yours, to make sure that we defend the institutions that make America stand head and shoulders above the rest of the world.Fighting for Our Farmers, Producers, and Rural CommunitiesFarmers and rural Michigan are bearing the brunt of the Trump administration’s tariff policy. The costs of seed, fertilizer, and fuel are all going up due to tariffs. And as a result of Trump’s threats, China stopped buying U.S. soybeans last year, tanking prices. Our farmers are committed to their communities and to growing the food necessary to feed and support them. The dismantling of USAID left many farmers in a tough spot with excess crops and nowhere to sell them. Congress needs to pass the Farm Bill Reauthorization to support farmers and rural communities through investment in infrastructure, workforce training, economic development, and conservation. In Congress, I will push for “Right to Repair” legislation. For too long, our farmers have been forced to wait for expensive repairs when they are capable of maintaining and repairing their equipment themselves, at much lower costs.Honoring Our Veterans by Giving Them the Care They NeedOur veterans fought for our freedoms, and we owe it to them to be there when they come home. That means ensuring all veterans receive the Veterans Administration benefits they earned, strengthening pathways for veterans to access job training and quality careers, and protecting and strengthening the VA.Right now, politicians in Washington aren’t focused on doing this. Instead, they’re slashing and burning, attacking the VA, and undermining our commitment to our veterans. In Congress, I’ll fight back against DOGE cuts impacting the VA that are undermining care.Investing in Local Public EducationI am a proud product of public schools and the son of a public school teacher. My wife and I are proud public school parents.I believe every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, which is why I strongly support public education and funding our public schools. In the Michigan Legislature, I helped increase funding to hire more public-school teachers, social workers, and therapists; expand access to free pre-K; and make free school breakfasts and lunch available to all K-12 students.Betsy DeVos, Elon Musk, and other billionaires who want to take away funding from public education are wrong, and I’ll stand up to them in Congress. We need to make sure our schools are providing our children with the skills they need to succeed, whether that means putting them on the path to a four-year degree or providing the technical education to connect them with the skills to work in a 21st-century manufacturing economy.Securing Our Border, Fixing Our Broken Immigration SystemOur immigration system is broken. There’s no way around it.A world exists where we can have a secure border that stops criminals from entering our country while providing a path for those who follow the rule of law to come here legally. What doesn’t keep us secure is ICE and untrained federal agents terrorizing our communities and killing American citizens in broad daylight. In Congress, I will do everything in my power to overhaul ICE and hold agents accountable for illegal actions.Keeping Communities Safe, Supporting Local Law EnforcementRegardless of who you are or where you live, you deserve the right to be safe in your home, your community, and with your neighbors. And our children deserve to go to school every day without the threat of gun violence. In the Michigan Legislature, I voted time and time again to fully fund our police, our firefighters, and programs that invested in mental health resources. In Congress, I’ll continue to be that champion—supporting local law enforcement and gun-violence prevention while promoting responsible gun ownership in our communities. Fighting for Reproductive FreedomI believe that the decision to start or grow a family is between a woman, her family, and her doctor—NOT politicians who have no place in the doctor’s office. In the Michigan Senate, I was proud to vote to repeal the 1931 abortion ban, ensuring these often difficult decisions are made by families and doctors, not politicians. And I was proud to serve as a board member of Planned Parenthood of South Central Michigan for several years. In Congress, I will fight back against extremist attempts to rip these decisions away from women. Bringing Good-Paying Jobs HomeThe middle class was built in Michigan, and these are roots we must never forget. But with corporate greed and monopolies run amok, billionaires are making a killing off the backs of everyday people. It’s time for Washington to work for the middle class again, not corporate special interests. People should be able to work, earn a good wage, and build a better life for their families. That should be a possibility, not a privilege, for everyone. We need to keep investing in manufacturing here at home to create good jobs and strengthen our local economies. But in the past year, we’ve seen businesses and manufacturing closing due to the rising economic instability caused by Trump’s chaotic tariff policies. The jobs lost from these plants closing are devastating to our communities. I’ve always worked to bring new businesses and jobs to Michigan—and that’s what I’ll continue to do in Congress.— Sean McCann's campaign website (July 29, 2026)Note: This text is quoted verbatim from the original source. What would be your top three priorities, if elected?
Investing in public schools and making college more accessible. Expanding access to affordable health care. Fixing our ailing roads and bridges.[12][13]
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?
Ensuring fair elections. We need to end the practice of politicians picking their voters. We must have independently drawn district lines that keep politicians accountable. There must also be an end to untraceable “dark money” being spent in politics, and work to make sure that politicians are not beholden to special interests or rich donors, but instead work to serve the people.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[13]
