Robert Lancia was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He was a chaplain in the U.S. Navy, serving from 1987 to 2004. Lancia received a bachelor's degree from Rhode Island College in 1976 and other degrees from Andover Newton Theological School in 1991 and United Theological Seminary in 2000. He has been affiliated with Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Military Officers Association of America.[1]

I am a former Navy chaplain, and 109% disabled vet, running for Congress.

The Rev. Billy Graham. I liked his honesty, integrity, and oratory skills.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

The movie "Miss Virginia ". The mom is a fighter who never gives up!

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, integrity, communication skills, and Constituent services.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Caring, compassionate, a good listener, a hard worker, never gives up, and will follow through on an issue until it is successfully completed.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Same as above.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I made a difference.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The assassination of President Kennedy.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Newspaper boy. During my early school years.

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Bible. It is my guide for living.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Superman.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

"Coffee for Your Head"

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

No.

What process do you favor for redistricting?

A non-partisan, citizen led, effort.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

The power that it has in affecting the lives of the average American.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

No. We need citizen legislators, not lifetime office holders.

What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Finances. We have an out of control Federal budget and a National Debt that will destroy us if not dealt with immediately!

Finance, Foreign Relations, and Education.

Yes.

Absolutely in favor of them!

Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?

No.

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

There is a family who has a young child who is in and out of the hospital all the time. The courage, the laughter, the love, and the caring shown by both mother and child touches me deeply!
