Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I currently am the director of a charitable organization in West Valley City and have been involved in public services since 1988. Graduate of contemporary animal services and parks and recreation from SUU I wrote and taught education programs at Tracy Aviary and currently provide EDU services to schools, libraries, and other venues in Northern Utah.
I have been in West Valley for 22 years and have met many residents and to discuss current events and the growth in this community. Many of the residents I've met at city council meetings that are not happy with our current government and the direction of our state.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
I live in your neighborhood and I act like a person not a politician. Therefore I represent you, not the state or highly influential corporations or developers. I want to see the people in each neighborhood get legislation that works for you.I provide jobs in my community and continue to have obstacles hiring immigrants. There should not years of waiting to get work permits or I-10 clearances to work.
I will work on making more of our residents productive and tax paying citizens.Tax structures and fees charged to our residents are unfair and some inappropriate. For example; West Valley residents are charged for street lights even if you do not have them on your street. These fees should be paid from other proper resources like fuel tax or included in road maintenance. This particular fee does not exist in other large cities. I also pay a separate fee for storm drains that don't exist within one half mile of my residence. Many residents aren't even aware they are being taxed.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Protecting the environment we live in and will leave to our children. Pollution and climate change will cost more if we continue to ignore and wait for someone else to fix it.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
Franklin D Roosevelt. He created work programs and many other venues that helped many citizens of this country in the 1930's
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
To be connected to the residents and business owners in the community.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I have engaged with the public in pubic service and as a business owner for five decades and enjoy helping people resolve problems.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Make sure each resident gets consideration for their voice about the community.
What legacy would you like to leave?
To know I made a difference in our younger generation.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I was 8 when the Watergate scandal happened. It caused me to pay more attention to our leaders.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
In 1972 I would ride my bicycle business to business selling bags of fresh donuts for $.50 and would get $.10 per sale.
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Aqua Man.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Tom Tom Club, Genius of Love
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Not much but to make everyone happy with the services I can provide.
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
We are closer to the people.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. Some get carried out to sea on the political raft if they loose site of being a person while involved in politics.
What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Getting immigrants to become functional citizens.
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
Yes.
What are your thoughts on term limits?
I would vote for 10 year limits.
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
Eminent domain and developers have enraged many residents in West Valley. The people need more rights for land they may have spent their life building.
Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?
Compromising is a good policy to being bipartisan and helping the most people.
The Constitution says that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House. What role would this power play in your priorities if elected?
To make sure the residents understand the benefits of bills and agree with them.
How should the U.S. House use its investigative powers?
To ensure regulations are followed.
What are your views on financial transparency and government accountability?
Our government needs to more responsible with spending.
