Background

Richard McGrew was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas.[1] McGrew's career experience includes owning McGrew Companies.[2] He has been affiliated with Rotary Club International and has served on the board of Champion Christian College, on the board of the Salvation Army, and as a justice of the peace of Garland County, Arkansas.[1]

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in Hot Springs. The entire mcgrew family including his wife Debbie, three children and three grandchildren live in district 22. I ran a successful small business for over 30 years and currently serve as a Republican justice of the peace. I am Rotarian, serve on the board of the Salvation Army, Champion Baptist CollegeI and served eight years on the city planning commission. I believe that the role of a representative is to listen and represent the people. As an Arkansas state representative, I will listen to the thoughts and concerns of the voters in my district. As a strong supporter of the constitution I will reference it as a guiding document for votes I take. I am 100% pro life. As a Christian, father And grandfather, I believe life begins at conception. I am also a strong supporter of our Second Amendment rights. As a gun owner and conservative I will fight to protect our rights. What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Fighting the war against drugs and drug addiction.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honestly, integrity and transparency.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Honesty, integrity and transparency.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

To listen to and represent the people in my district. Having a firm commitment to the constitution and what it stands for.

What legacy would you like to leave?

The legacy I would like to leave is that in order to be successful in life, you have to put God first.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Starting a small business from scratch and building that business while raising a family was a great challenge.

Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?

I do believe it can be helpful. I plan to use my experience as Justice of the Peace to serve as Arkansas State Representative.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Making sure we have a competitive environment when it comes to economic development and growth.

What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?

Open communication. It is essential that every public servant understands their duties and their roles as defined by the constitution.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

I absolutely believe it is crucial to build relationships with other legislators. As each legislator specializes in different areas, it is very important that we share that communication in order to make educated decisions to the benefit of our great State of Arkansas.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

I am very interested in the health, welfare and labor. Specifically fighting the war against drug addiction.

Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?

I am concentrating on serving my constituents in my district.
