In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I am a retired pastor who served mostly progressive congregations in rural areas. Prior to becoming a pastor, I served in the US Navy as a submarine sailor. I continued my navy career as a chaplain in the reserves, serving a total of 31 years. In my retirement, I have written some books and done some travelling (my bucket list includes visiting all of the Presidential Libraries -- I have been to 9 so far). I have also become involved in my community by participating in church, Kiwanis, and for the first time in my life, politics.

My wife and I have been married for 40 years and have 4 children, 10 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. We had a daughter with special needs who died in 2022.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

My experience as a pastor taught me how to work with people who are passionate about their ideas to work toward common goals. It also taught me that every voice is worth hearing and every person has worth. My experience on submarines and living in small towns, has taught me that every person is a valued member of the community, and that even if I don't agree with someone, we can find ways to live together. Too often, it seems to me, politicians have forgotten how to treat each other with respect. It's time to work together for the common good rather than whatever agenda partisan actors want to push.Raising a daughter with special needs has helped me see the need for special education advocates. In a state where the constitution requires the legislature to fund public education, I believe it is imperative that we include all students in our state with the best chance of succeeding. A democracy depends on a well educated society. I benefited from that, and I want to ensure the next generation does, too.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am concerned about three primary issues: water management, mental health services, and the quality of life infrastructure that is often overlooked (such as parks, arts, and access to the necessities of food, shelter, and healthcare).

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

None yet.
