In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Randy Cowling isn't a career politician — he's a neighbor, a journalist, and a tireless advocate for working families. Now he's ready to take that same heart for people to the Oklahoma State Senate.
With decades of experience serving the people of northeast Oklahoma, I bring a proven record of compassion, integrity, and action to his campaign. As the Executive Director of Owasso Community Resources (OCR) for the past 11 years he dedicated himself to ensuring that no family in his community goes without.
Prior to serving OCR, Randy was managing editor of The Claremore Daily Progress, where he won numerous awards for editorial writing and overall excellence with the Sequoyah Award from the Oklahoma Press Association.
I know the importance of a public-school education. Teachers are precious – Our most valued asset, who shape the lives of our children. We must do better in supporting them.
Randy's education, faith and deep roots in the community ground his commitment to public service. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Southwest Baptist University, a Master of Divinity, and a Doctor of Ministry from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
Randy is married to Pamela Dunlap, father to two adult daughters and grandfather of six.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
I’m running to give voice to those who have been overlooked and need an advocate. State government should work for the people not the other way around. It’s people over politics.
For more than a decade families, educators and businesses needed a listening ear from their senator. Not much has change in that time, It has even gotten harder and harder to navigate. Are you really better off than you were four years ago?
I say no. I will listen to every concern and follow up with constituents and work on legislation to solve their problems and really help them be successful.Improve government transparency for every Oklahoman. Constituents deserve and open process when it comes to the state budget and it effects their everyday lives. Transparency requires trusting the people we serve.Promises have been made to lift Oklahoma to a Top Ten position in education and economic growth. In a decade, Oklahoma is still in the bottom five states in education, number on in domestic violence cases, near the bottom in infant mortality, number one - worst in the nation - on predatory loans, and eight worse in childhood poverty. However, our legislators continue address issues that do not impact everyday families. If elected, I will first listen to the constituent of District 2 and work for real solutions to raise the bar of quality of life issues.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
· Backing a living wage and financial stability for every household
· Stronger schools with smarter spending.
· Improve government transparency for every Oklahoman.
· Improve Oklahoma’s ranking in education, overall poverty, cases of domestic violence, and tighten predatory loan practices.
