Background
Velázquez was born in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, in 1953. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras in 1972, and a master's degree from New York University in 1976.[2][3] Velázquez previously as a Special Assistant to Congressman Edolphus Towns (D), as director of the Migration Division Office for the Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Human Resources, and as director of the Department of Puerto Rican Community Affairs in the United States for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.[4][2]
