In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I was born in Australia, and moved to Aroostook County when I was 14 to be closer to my mother's family. I graduated from Presque Isle High School and then the University of Maine with a bachelor's degree in economics.

I began teaching math and computer science at Sacopee Valley High School, and my wife and I bought a home in the district. I am proud to call Hiram my home. I consider myself a lifelong learner and work to instill that mentality in the students I am fortunate enough to teach.

While in Sacopee Valley school system, I chaired the math department and lead the junior class trip to Quebec each March. I was the vice president of the Tri-County Teachers Association and was the statistician for our contract negotiations team. Through my work the Maine Education Association, I was elected and appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Maine Public Employees Retirement Service, where I did my part in stewarding the twenty one billion dollar trust fund for all state employees.

In separating from SVHS, I took off those hats, but within the community, I'm still deeply involved. I'm elected to the Hiram Conservation Committee, and a director for the Francis Small Heritage Trust, our local land trust. I’m the treasurer of Porter Grange #569, and my wife and I are on the board for the Ossipee Valley Music Festival, where we organize and run the front gate. I hope to see you there!

These are the things that make me, me. I'm ready to learn, and lead.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Education. I was a high school teacher for 13 years, and during that time there were always people in the legislature telling us how to do our jobs who have no idea how our jobs work. I'd like to go to Augusta to be a voice at the table on behalf of educators across the state and workers at large.Technology and Infrastructure.

Telecommuting, an approach many workplaces are still employing, is not possible without better internet infrastructure. Additionally, as the oldest state in the nation, we have a set of residents in our communities that are unable to make use of Telehealth services or to rightsize their living situations because their homes aren't connected to the internet and that makes them unsellable. When I had to teach during the Pandemic, I couldn’t do it from home because my internet connection wasn’t strong enough to stream my document camera with high enough fidelity for math examples to be seen clearly by my students. I’ve been in my house for a decade and am still connected to the internet by copper cable. The Environment.

Both solar issues and divestment from fossil fuels are serious issues that are affecting our state and our planet. When I was last in Australia, 2 years ago visiting my father, the Great Barrier Reef of my childhood, and that we all saw in Finding Nemo, was in crisis. Climate change is real and is happening at an alarming rate. We are lucky to have a solar company in our district, in Hiram. The voting record of our legislator has affected their ability to do their job and it has impacted the investment and adoption of solar and green technologies that we need to be making.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I believe in education and technology. I'd like to see our state ensure a living wage for anyone who works 40 hours a week. I'd like to see healthcare decoupled from employment, so that if you can't work 40 hours a week you still have access to healthcare, whether through a nationwide medicare for all approach or a statewide Mainecare approach.

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
