Alam was born in Khulna, Bangladesh. He worked for three years as a high school math and science teacher in Bangladesh before moving to the United States and joining the U.S. Army in 2000. Alam served as a logistical operation and supply sergeant in the Iraq war and received an honorable discharge in 2005. Alam earned a graduate degree from the University of the Pacific in 2007; a graduate degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City, in 2010; and a Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in 2014. He again taught high school math and science within the United States for two years before becoming CEO of Minority Directed Small Business in 2007. Alam also served as national chairman for the Democratic Party Asian American Caucus and as chair for its first national caucus in 2011.[1][2]
