Campaign themes
The following issues were listed on Snow's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.
Clean Air: Coal remains the number one source of electricity in this country, accounting for about one third of our total electricity generation. In Utah, coal accounts for nearly 80% of the electricity produced in the state. Coal is a significant contributor to the notoriously bad air experienced in places such as Salt Lake County and Utah County, which are already susceptible to inversions.
Increase Access to Healthcare: There are approximately 33 million people in this country that do not have access to health insurance. As a result, we have thousands of people dying each year because they can't afford health insurance, and thousands more die each year because the health insurance they have is insufficient. Millions that do have adequate care are burdened with high premiums, deductibles, and prescription drug prices.
Get Money Out of Politics: The most important issue facing our country is that there is too much money in politics. Corporations can spend almost limitless money to influence the election process, which gives them enormous power over our democracy. Not only does this money limit which candidates can get elected, it also affects which bills candidates support once in office; candidates are much more likely to support bills that are favorable to donors who helped them get elected. This is a system of political corruption and legalized bribery and it needs to end.
$15 / Hour Living Wage: The current minimum wage is egregiously low and in need of major adjustments. If the minimum wage from 1968 had been adjusted for inflation, our current minimum wage would be over $11.00 an hour as opposed to the $7.25 an hour it is today. The federal government is in effect subsidizing many of the corporations that are paying these low wages as many of their employees qualify for, and will receive, food stamps.
Women's Rights: There are over 40 years of legal precedent affirming that a woman's right to abortion is protected by the constitution. Despite this, conservatives continue to create obstacles and limitations to prevent women from exercising this right. Conservatives have also been working to defund Planned Parenthood by using false evidence and highly-edited videos to generate support for their cause; this is very troubling as Planned Parenthood provides many important health services to women, teens, and LGBT people.
