Ryan received his B.A. in English from Allegheny College located in Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1993 and his J.D. from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law in 1996. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1996 and held the following positions until his election to the court of common pleas:[3]

2000–2001: Associate Attorney, Forbes, Fields and Associates

1999–2000: City of Cleveland Prosecutor’s Office

1998–1999: Attorney, Office of Professional Standards

1997–1998: Assistant City Prosecuting Attorney, City of Cleveland Prosecutor’s Office
