Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Michael Duffin is a laid-off federal employee running as a Democrat in Virginia's 8th Congressional District to reinstate Feds, restore the Middle Class, and reform Washington. He spent 12 years at the State Department, including a decade countering terrorism. He played an important role in countering the Islamic State's spread around the world and developed the U.S. government's first programs to counter white supremacy overseas. Last July, he was one of 1,300 domestically based State Department staff who were laid off by DOGE. Disappointed in the lack of fight for Feds from the incumbent, Rep. Don Beyer, Duffin decided to challenge him. He earned graduate degrees in international public policy from Johns Hopkins University, public diplomacy from the University of Southern California, and journalism from Northwestern University. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from DePaul University. Duffin was born in a Working-Class neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago and brings that fighting spirit to the campaign trail. He has advocated for the reinstatement of Feds in interviews with The Daily Show, NPR, MS NOW, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. He strongly believes that our political system has been corrupted by corporations and the wealthy. He will not accept any corporate PAC donations and believes term limits and publicly financed campaigns are an essential remedy for fixing our broken political system.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Reinstating Federal Employees: The Trump administration has fired more than 300,000 federal workers across the country, including tens of thousands of Northern Virginians. We lost our jobs and benefits, and many of us are in danger of losing our homes. Rep. Beyer has not been an effective fighter against these cuts. Oftentimes, he's aloof. We need a representative laser-focused on reinstating as many Feds as possible.Restoring the Middle Class: Growing up in a Working Class family on the South Side of Chicago, I believed that you just had to work hard to achieve the American Dream. But the system has been rigged against us. For too long, Washington has put corporations first — driving up the cost of housing, healthcare, and education while wages stagnate. The Middle Class built this country, and it is being hollowed out by policies that reward the ultra-rich and leave everyone else behind. In Congress, I will fight to lower costs for Virginia families, protect Social Security and Medicare, and build an economy that works for everyone — not just those at the top.Reforming Washington: Our political system is broken — and the people who benefit from it like Rep. Beyer won't fix it. Corporate money floods our elections, career politicians serve their donors instead of their constituents, and nothing ever changes. I refuse to take a single corporate PAC dollar. I believe in term limits and publicly financed campaigns to return power to the people. Virginia's 8th District deserves a representative who answers to you, not to Wall Street. It's time to reform a system that has stopped working for working Americans.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Growing up Working Class on the South Side of Chicago instilled in me a deep belief in the dignity of work and the idea that government should serve the many, not the few. That belief carried me through 12 years of public service at the State Department. But I'm also deeply frustrated with my own party.
The Democratic Party spent too many years speaking to college-educated professionals in coastal cities while losing touch with Working-Class voters who feel left behind economically. We failed to make a compelling case that government actually works for them — and Donald Trump filled that void. Twice. The lesson of 2016 and 2024 isn't that Working-Class Americans abandoned their values. It's that Democrats abandoned them.
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
As a first-time candidate, I have witnessed firsthand how the endorsement process has become more about political calculus than genuine support for the best candidate. Too many organizations and elected officials attach stipulations to their endorsements or withhold them based on factors that have nothing to do with fitness for office. Rather than spending my time courting gatekeepers, I have chosen to focus my energy where it belongs — engaging voters directly. The people of Virginia's 8th District deserve a representative who answers to them, not to the organizations and power brokers who try to pick winners before a single vote is cast.
Campaign websiteDuffin's campaign website stated the following:REBUILD THE MIDDLE CLASS Working Families and young professionals face too many obstacles in pursuit of the American Dream. We need to increase home ownership, forgive student loan debt, and protect workers from AI.REFORM WASHINGTON We need campaign finance reform, term limits, and a ban on stock trading. You shouldn't have to be wealthy like Don Beyer to run for office.PROMOTE KINDNESS & COMPASSION We must protect immigrants, people of faith, and our LGBTQIA+ community from hate-motivated violence.DIPLOMACY MATTERS America should be building schools, not bombing them. We must rebuild our alliances and restore USAID. Congress must also provide real oversight of the Pentagon.— Michael Duffin's campaign website (May 17, 2026)Note: This text is quoted verbatim from the original source.
