In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My story is rooted in family, hard work, and service. I am Maryellen Murphy, a longtime South County resident, wife, mother of 3, grandmother of 12, and former small-business owner.
Hard work was expected in my family. My father was the 1st in his family to attend an English-speaking school and graduate from college. He taught us that success was something you earned. I carried that lesson with me, earning degrees in Consumer Economics and Business Administration in 3½ years while working multiple jobs.
My husband, Jim, and I spent 30 years running a family business while raising our children in South County and becoming deeply involved in our community. Public service is a tradition in the Murphy family. 2 of our children have served on the Mehlville School District Board of Education, and Jim is completing 8 years representing District 94 in the MO House.
During those 8 years, I worked alongside him at community events, food distributions, vaccine clinics, Stop the Bleed classes, and on issues brought forward by local families. I attended meetings and seminars, worked with residents, and helped coordinate communications and logistics.
Today, our children and 12 grandchildren all live nearby. I am running to help keep South County and MO safe, strong, and full of opportunity for the generations that follow us.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Keep Taxes Low and Government Limited
I believe limited government protects individual freedom, encourages personal responsibility, and keeps decision-making closer to the people. I will work to keep taxes low, reduce unnecessary regulations and bureaucracy, and protect the ability of individuals, families, and small businesses to make their own decisions.
Government should focus on providing essential services efficiently, protecting public safety, respecting taxpayers, and creating an environment where families and businesses can succeed. By limiting unnecessary government interference, we can give citizens and local communities greater control over their own futures while encouraging economic growth and long-term prosperity.Education and Parental Choice:
Supporting strong public schools is the foundation of thriving communities, but parents should also have the freedom to choose the educational setting that best fits their child. Education policy should put the child first, respect parents’ role in making decisions, and help ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed. Supporting excellent public schools while expanding options puts students first, strengthens accountability, and gives every family a better chance to help their child succeed.A Safe and Growing St. Louis:
I want St. Louis to succeed as an economic engine for Missouri. A safe, growing community gives families confidence to put down roots, businesses the security to invest, and young people opportunities to build their futures close to home. Strong law enforcement, excellent schools, responsible development, and a thriving local economy work together to strengthen neighborhoods, create good jobs, attract investment, and ensure our region remains a great place to live, work, raise a family, and prosper for generations.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about public safety, education, small business, economic growth, and making government more efficient and accountable. Families and businesses need safe communities to thrive, so I strongly support law enforcement and policies that strengthen neighborhoods. I believe in public schools, while respecting parents and giving families choices for their children. As a former small-business owner, I understand how taxes, regulations, & red tape affect employers, workers, and families. I will work to keep taxes low, reduce unnecessary regulations, encourage investment, and help make St. Louis an economic engine for Missouri. Government should provide essential services efficiently while respecting taxpayers and individual freedom.
