Belk attended Garinger High School. She was elected to the council of the church Our Lady of the Assumption when she was 19 years old. In the 1970s, Belk worked in the field of insurance adjustment. She also owned a family printing business with her husband, Ralph. After retiring from the printing business, Belk and her husband formed a partnership called New River Retreat Properties, a vacation rental investment firm.[1]

Belk attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she obtained a degree in political science in 2006. She was a member of the Model United Nations.[1]

Belk issued the following statement regarding her bid for office:

The education of our children, the safety of our neighborhoods, and the health of our communities are far more than political issues for Mary Belk. They’re necessities for a thriving North Carolina. This year, District 88 is sending her to the NC House of Representatives to fight for them.

Family and community have always been Mary’s anchors, so her goal is simple: to focus on improving and growing our region by giving every family the opportunity to educate their children, keep them healthy, and put them on a path to success.
