In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I was a long time community college teacher who has an inside perspective on how and if students come prepared academically from our K-12 system. I also have long been active, organizing in the working class.
I have always been an ardent supporter for high quality, public education, for all students. And I have seen the disparity that exists between school districts and know that this doesn't have to be. Why do we have to reinvent the wheel every year, with research studies proving that there are higher test scores, literacy rates, etc, when we know why. Funding for public education, transportation, health care, special needs services, food -- you name it -- whatever children need to in order to flourish, should be at the top of the list of all federal and state expenditures.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
If we truly lived in a society where children come first, then there should be a tidal wave of resources going to quality education for all students. There should be NO budget shortfalls for education. We should refuse to let schools and public services be cheated for money, when the money is there. School superintendents, principals, teachers, and parents should not be forced to choose between art or sports or college prep classes. A comprehensive curriculum, including cultural and athletic programs, should exist in all public schools. We won't change the situation of the working class with an election by itself. But by voting for Working Class Party candidates, hundreds of thousands of working people can show they are fed up with this capitalist society, that discriminates against children of the working class, at the same time exploiting them for their labor once they are out of school.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
As a candidate for State Board of Education with Working Class Party, the fight for high quality public education for all students is prominent on my list of what needs to change in this society.
