In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I am a husband, father and novelist who lives in Enfield. I've written several bestselling science fiction series. I am a former IT administrator and bookseller, and a veteran who served in the West German military for four years. I am also an American by choice, having become a naturalized citizen in 2004.

I'm a long-time resident of the Upper Valley along with my wife Robin, our two children, and three dogs. I got my first taste of local politics when I served in my local youth chapter of the Social Democrats in Germany, where I was raised.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

As a full-time novelist, I was also a stay-at-home spouse who raised two children in the Upper Valley, so I understand the value and importance of good and well-funded public education. Some folks are hesitant about their property taxes paying for public schools, especially if they don't have kids, but good schools attract more young families to our community. A well-funded public school system sets up the kids for better jobs in the future, both of which increase the tax base and eventually our quality of life.Enfield and Canaan have become Upper Valley bedroom towns. Many residents commute daily to Dartmouth and DHMC, and housing costs have followed. Slow approval processes have only made the squeeze worse. There's a line to walk between building more housing and overloading our local infrastructure. My goal is to walk that line carefully, by supporting new housing where it makes sense, without overwhelming the services these towns depend on or negatively impacting the natural beauty of our communities.Like everyone else in the community, I have dealt with the rising costs of nearly everything. I hope to work with the communities in Grafton-18 and the state legislature to address ways to help improve the cost of living in New Hampshire.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about preserving our strong local civic involvement, our democratic traditions, and our independent way of life. Hand in hand with that goes the belief that my neighbors have the right to love who they love, worship how they wish (or not at all) without interference, and to feel safe in their communities regardless of their ethnicity, national origin, or citizenship status.
