In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Mark was born in Sacramento, CA, but grew up in Washington, DC. He has a Bachelor's degree in Music from the Manhattan School of Music. When he returned to CA, he received his Master’s in Education Administration at UC Berkeley.

For 29 years, he was a Music teacher in the Oakland Unified School District and served in the Oakland Education Association as a site rep, Executive Board member, Treasurer, Secretary and Representative to the California Teachers Association State Council where he founded the Green Party caucus and almost got the CTA leadership to submit a statewide ballot to increase taxes on the wealthy and corporations.

In 2001, he organized the teachers and parents of his students in the action to persuade the Oakland USD to adopt an Integrated Pest Management Plan, which it did adopt, thus ending the use of toxic pesticides in all of the public schools in Oakland.

Mark has been a member of the Green Party since the early 1990s.

Now, he’s ready to serve his community in Assembly District 14 (AD14) and bring a progressive voice to Sacramento.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Healthcare with CalCare (Medicare for All): we will have better quality services for everyone at a lower cost to the State.End the Housing Crisis: with social housing (not public housing projects) where we will buy a lot of the 1.2 million vacant housing units to provide decent housing for the 186,000 unhoused residents in the State. We will establish a Public Bank which will allocate funds for buying properties. We will tax the 246 billionaires and wealthy corporations to pay their fair share so we can help all the other 40 million residents of the state.I will fight to block the proposed coal port in Oakland and make the plan to transform the Chevron oil refinery in Richmond. As an ecosocialist, I prioritize People, Planet and Peace. I envision a return to land stewardship with the Indigenous people of this land to live in harmony with Mother Earth. When all the decisions we make are based on love and protecting the planet, we will take care of all the people.
