In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Mark Becker, and I am running for State Senate to represent Wisconsin’s 1st Senate District as an Independent.

I am a small business owner and lifelong resident of Northeast Wisconsin. Most importantly, I am a father who wants the world that my children inherit to be one in which they can not only survive, but thrive.

I am running as an Independent because I have always believed that there is more that unites us than divides us. As the former Chairman of the Republican Party of Brown County, I have witnessed, firsthand, how extreme politics and tribalism have warped the fabric of our state politics, for the worse.

As your next State Senator, I promise:

1) To listen to you;

2) To be honest with you;

3) To fight for you, regardless of if you voted for me or not.

I look forward to meeting you all on the campaign trail, and eventually, serving you in Madison!

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Making Life Affordable Again.

For too many people in Wisconsin, it feels like no matter how hard you work, you still fall further behind. Families are doing everything right and still struggling to afford groceries, utilities, childcare, housing, and healthcare. That is not sustainable, and it is not acceptable.

We need leaders focused less on partisan theater and more on the actual cost of living facing working people every single day.Making investments in our state that last.

Supporting Our Public Schools: Every student in this state deserves access to a quality education. Public schools are the heartbeat of our communities. They are where our kids learn, where people vote, and where communities gather for Friday night football games, celebrate the arts, and so much more.

Expanding Access To Affordable Healthcare: Healthcare costs continue to rise while access continues to shrink, especially in rural Wisconsin. Healthcare should not be a luxury in this state.

Tackling Wisconsin’s Housing Crisis: The cost, availability, and quality of housing have become one of the biggest economic problems facing Wisconsin families.Ending Division.

People are exhausted by the constant division. Politics has become less about solving problems and more about keeping people angry at each other. Too many politicians and media figures profit from outrage, identity politics, and keeping communities divided. Wisconsin can do better than that.

We have to get back to seeing the humanity in one another. Most people, regardless of political party, want many of the same basic things: safe communities, affordable lives, good schools, clean water, and a fair shot for their kids.

But if we want something different, we have to do something different. We cannot keep electing the same people, accepting the same gridlock, and expecting different results.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Protecting individual freedoms is incredibly important to me. I've always called myself a "bad Republican" because I'm someone who has always believed in things such as women's rights and marriage equality.

I'm a small-government guy, and I believe that the legislature should have no business in a woman's doctor's office or in someone's bedroom. I will always stand up for the rights of Wisconsinites to make the right choices for them and their families, because they are the ones who should be making those choices, not any politician in Madison.
