Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Louis Marinelli is the founder of the California Independence Movement and the first president of the Yes California Independence Campaign which became known around the world as Calexit. Marinelli, 35, has a wife and a four-month-old daughter with whom he is currently living in Russia, where he is a kindergarten teacher and runs the California Embassy and Culture Center in Moscow. Louis is returning to California, where he has maintained residency while living abroad, once his daughter receives her US birth certificate and passport through the US Embassy in Moscow and other immigration matters are resolved.
Louis Marinelli is a Republican by party affiliation, but is not a conservative ideologue. He supports a taxpayer-funded public healthcare option to provide basic health care services for all, universal Pre-K from the age of three, eighteen months of paid maternity leave to allow mothers to bond with their newborn children, comprehensive police and criminal justice reforms, and a legal status for undocumented immigrants living and paying taxes in California.
Meanwhile, Marinelli opposes the teaching of Critical Race Theory in schools and likewise opposes paying out reparations. He supports school choice, parental rights, the right to bear arms, efforts to limit government power, and although he is not religious, he is pro-life. Louis has been a vocal opponent of government lockdowns and mask mandates during the pandemic and opposes mandatory vaccination.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Independence will be on the ballot this year in California.A vote for Marinelli is a vote for #Calexit. An Independence leader for the next generation of Californians.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
As a kindergarten teacher, Louis is passionate about family issues such as maternity leave and access to Pre-K from a young age. He wants to expand maternity leave to include eighteen months of paid time off to allow parents to bond with their new children, and offer Pre-K to all children from the age of three.
Louis Marinelli is passionate about protecting civil liberties just as much as he cares about protecting civil rights. That's why he supports medical freedom, the decriminalization of drugs, and the legalization of sex work. He wants to enact comprehensive police and criminal justice reform, and demilitarize the police.
Louis Marinelli is also passionate about California becoming an independent country. He wants to use the platform of the governorship to advance the cause of California Independence and declare California an independent country.
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
I would recommend people read "1984" to understand how important it is to resist the growth of totalitarianism, to protect society from falling under the sway of propaganda, to preserve one's identity and protect one's independence, to encourage people to question more, to encourage upward mobility in society, to avoid censorship and the rewriting of history, and to preserve the right to free speech. We need to recognize in our laws that the Internet is the public square of the 21st Century.
What legacy would you like to leave?
That we did what we could to leave this world in better shape when we turn it over to the next generation, than when we inherited it from the last generation.
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
The first historical event I remember occurring in my lifetime is the invasion of Iraq during the Gulf War. I was about five years old at the time and remember watching the invasion on CNN. Now I am 35 years old and my country is still at war in the Middle East.
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Baby Shark. I teach 4-year-olds in a private kindergarten.
Governors have many responsibilities, which vary from state to state. Which of those do you personally consider the most important in your state?
I believe the most important responsibility of the the governor is to serve as a check against the one-party rule in the State Legislature in order to protect civil liberties as much as we protect civil rights.
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
The greatest challenges California faces over the next decade are water availability, producing enough power to meet demand, climate change, homelessness, and housing costs.
We need to invest in more infrastructure and technology to collect, store, and transport water across California and we need to properly manage our forests. We need to balance the importance of combating climate change and shifting towards greener and cleaner energy production with the necessity of avoiding rolling blackouts. We need to come up with innovative solutions in addition to taking obvious steps to tackle the homelessness crisis, and we need to get government out of the way of building more housing. We also need to create an incentive program that encourages the construction and purchasing of homes in inland California.
