Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Dr. Lorenza Wilkins is an equity-driven servant leader, inductee into the National Society of Leadership
and Success, and a member of the National Small Business Association’s Leadership Council. As a 2018
participant in the National Opportunity Youth Forum hosted by the Aspen Institute, Dr. Wilkins is forever
committed to philanthropy. As a former Consultant with Clemson University’s South Carolina Coalition
for Mathematics & Science, Dr. Wilkins supports raising student achievement and advocating for STEM,
financial literacy, and entrepreneurship. As Co-Founder of Compass Youth Center, Dr. Wilkins credits
projects with North Carolina Central University’s Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology
Enterprise (BRITE), Duke University’s Design Thinking Team, and Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship
with shaping his philosophy on public service. Dr. Wilkins’ background includes multi-level experience in
the private, public, and social sectors; currently serving as Chief Officer of People and Culture at the
Inter-Faith Food Shuttle. Dr. Wilkins also serves as Board Chair at the Reintegration Support Network
and holds certifications in Six Sigma, Servant Leadership, Foundations for Success, Leading Through
Failure, and Building Your Team. As a graduate of Leadership Triangle, Dr. Wilkins is a proud Goodmon

Fully Funding Public Schools, Supporting the Creation and Growth of Small Businesses, Advocating for more Mental Health Resources in the Community, and Protecting Women's Reproductive Freedoms.
Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
I look up to my parents who have taught me the values of hard work, serving others, and believing in God.

The "I Have a Dream Speech" by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Integrity, Honest, and Compassion.
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
Hard work, ethical behavior, and effective communications skills.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To serve and actively listen to the voices of the community.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Shooting of President Ronald Reagan. I was eight years old.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Landscaper. Continuous.

The Box Car Children by Gertrude Chandler due to the resilience of four orphaned children.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Witnessing the inequities that still exist in education and economic opportunity amongst the underserved.
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and state legislature?
The Governor and state legislature should work together as a pilot and co-pilot for the state of North Carolina to ensure that all citizens have an equal opportunity to participate in the shared prosperity of our region.
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
Addressing the gaps in education, health care disparities, fair housing, protecting the environment, and creating economic opportunity for all.
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Yes. However, experience in the public, private, and social sectors is equally (or in some cases) more beneficial.
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. Building and maintaining healthy relationships promote teamwork and the ability to solve simple and complex problems amicably.
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
No. I would like to be the best Legislator that Dr. Lorenza Wilkins can be.

Not sure.
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I regularly hear personal stories from residents in HD 25 about the lack of access to capital to fund/expand their small business and the many barriers people of color and minorities face in education, healthcare, and homeownership.

Maybe. It depends on the situation.
