Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I was born and raised in Utah by Somali immigrant parents who taught me that service to your community is a responsibility. I am a proud Muslim, a proud American, and a proud Utahn. Like many children of immigrants, I felt I had achieved the American Dream when I entered Big Tech. However, the more I learned about corporate power and the negative impacts of social media and artificial intelligence, the more I questioned whether these systems were serving everyday people. From there, I dove deeper into accountability, corporate power, and who bears the cost of innovation. And that’s ultimately the ordinary people. But it doesn’t have to be this way. This brought me back to community service and influenced my decision to run for Congress, to initiate responsible innovation, and to address the needs of fellow Utahns.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
This is a big-tent campaign where anyone can have a seat at the table. Our focus has been on welcoming new people into politics and re-engaging with communities, including young voters who have often felt overlooked. My generation is struggling with rising household costs, student debt, and uncertainty about the future. We're living through these challenges together. Our campaign continues to ensure that we include voters of all backgrounds in our policies, platforms, and outreach. I will be the vehicle for Utahns who feel like our government is not working for them, and I will deliver results for my constituents. I will support legislation that puts people first by lowering costs, expanding affordable housing and healthcare, creating good-paying jobs, and getting corporate money out of politics.Americans need a new generation of leadership that prioritizes diplomacy abroad and stability at home. At a time when Americans are struggling with rising costs, we should not be pursuing wars or policies that create conflict, but reprioritize military spending and invest in basic needs for Americans. Diplomacy must always come before war. We also need to introduce a fairer immigration system, unlike President Trump’s dangerous immigration policy, which is instilling fear in our immigrant communities, America’s heart and foundation, and beacon of hope. We must introduce a system that protects due process, provides pathways to legal status, and treats people with dignity.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I am passionate about water preservation and protection, healthcare access, and curbing corporate influence in policy. Water consumption must be managed with intention and requires broader water rights reform and more sustainable farming practices. We must also act now to save the Great Salt Lake. Healthcare access is vital. I support a single-payer healthcare system that prioritizes care over profit. I also support policies such as banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks and prohibiting corporate PAC donations.
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
Our campaign continues to build momentum with endorsements from Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, Utah House Democratic Leader Angela Romero, Utah State Senator Sandra Hollins, Utah House Representative Ashlee Mathews, the Utah Progressive Caucus, the Utah Democratic Black Caucus, the Utah Women's Caucus, Utah AANHPI Democratic Caucus, Former UT-01 Candidate and Utah State Senator Derek Kitchen, the Salt Lake County Democratic Progressive Caucus, Citizens Impeachment, Utah March Organization, and Minnesota State Senator Omar Fateh.
Campaign websitesMohamed's campaign website stated the following:People In, Money OutA healthy democracy rests on the principle that every citizen’s voice carries equal weight.Today, unlimited corporate and PAC spending allows concentrated wealth to drown out the needs of our communities. Too often, a handful of powerful actors shape our political system at the expense of working people.I am committed to advancing reforms that restore the integrity of our elections and overturn legal precedents that have commodified our democracy. Healthcare is a Human RightAmericans pay a “double tax” for healthcare: first through taxes that fund public programs, and then again through private insurance premiums, deductibles, and out-of-pocket costs. We pay more than any country on Earth, yet we are the only wealthy nation that does not guarantee coverage.Medicare for All: This replaces the broken, fragmented system with one simple public program that covers everyone. Cut out the middleman: By doing so, we can end premiums and deductibles, negotiate lower drug prices, and dramatically reduce administrative waste, delivering comprehensive coverage at a lower overall cost. When we put health over profit, every Utahn has the foundation to live a full, dignified life.Preserve Our EnvironmentUtah’s public lands, clean air, and water are part of our shared commons and they must be protected from privatization. Support the Green New Deal: We must confront the climate crisis while creating good-paying clean energy jobs, and I will support America's Red Rock Wilderness Act and the Central Wasatch National Conservation and Recreation Area Act to permanently protect Utah’s lands and watersheds. Saving Our Great Salt Lake: This is essential to Utah’s future, which is why I support legally enforceable minimum lake levels, water-use reform, and federal investment in wetland protection. Public lands and clean water: These are public goods, and I will always put people, climate justice, and Tribal sovereignty ahead of greed.Foreign PolicyFor too long, the U.S. has prioritized military expansion over the prosperity of its own citizens. I am fighting for a foreign policy that trades the cycle of endless war for a future of collaborative diplomacy and humanitarian leadership.Invest in Americans, Not War: Our defense budget has surged to nearly $1 trillion while funding for education, healthcare, and housing is slashed. I support rebalancing our federal priorities to invest in the American people rather than fueling global conflict.Stop Atrocities & Genocide: Opposing genocide is a legal and moral mandate. We must use every diplomatic and economic lever to end the targeting, starvation, and displacement of civilians in Gaza, Sudan, and the Congo. The U.S. must never be a party to the destruction of innocent life.Uphold International Law: America should lead by example. I will fight to ensure that we uphold international legal standards and hold any entity, friend or foe, accountable for violations of human rights.Lead with Diplomacy: Military force should be the last resort, not the default. We must revitalize our diplomatic and economic tools to resolve crises before they escalate, fostering mutually beneficial partnerships across the globe.Big Tech AccountabilityInnovation must come with accountability. I support strong federal standards that protect people, workers, and democracy. This includes ensuring up to date privacy laws, strong safeguards for children online, environmental standards for data centers, protecting workers, and strict oversight to protect against biased censorship.Invest in Our Children's FutureIn every other wealthy nation, new parents are guaranteed paid time off and access to affordable childcare when they return to work. If other countries can do this, we can too. I am fighting for a platform that ensures:Paid Parental Leave: No parent should ever be forced to choose between their newborn and their paycheck. Every new parent deserves guaranteed, paid time off to be with their child during those first critical months.Universal Childcare: When parental leave ends, families need a system that is seamless, affordable, and close to home. We will invest in childcare that supports our workforce and gives every family the peace of mind they deserve.Universal Pre-K: Every child should have the opportunity to succeed. By providing universal high-quality preschool for all three and four-year-olds, we ensure that every student starts kindergarten ready to learn, regardless of their family’s income.Access to HousingThe American Dream of homeownership is being pushed out of reach by a massive housing shortage and aggressive speculation by Wall Street. It’s time to protect our neighborhoods and ensure that those who work in our communities can afford to live in them.End Corporate Takeovers: Restrict large private equity firms from buying up our neighborhoods. Homes should be for families to own, not for corporations to flip into high-rent commodities.End the Housing Shortage: Streamline the development of new housing and remove the red tape that prevents us from building the supply our workforce desperately needs.Expand Affordable Housing: Direct federal investment into high-quality, permanently affordable units for seniors, veterans, and our working-class neighbors.Protect Renters & Homeowners: Housing is a right. We will end unfair evictions, break up rent-fixing schemes, and keep families in their homes.Dignified ImmigrationImmigrants are more than their legal status. For a lot of us, they are family, friends, and often the heart of our communities. They also play an integral part in our economy. A just society requires that every person be treated with dignity. Abolish ICE & End Detention: We must replace the current enforcement-only model with a system rooted in accountability, fairness, and community. I will fight to end immigration detention and build a system that reflects our humanity.Full Citizenship for Dreamers: DACA recipients are Americans in every way except on paper. We will fight for permanent protections and a direct path to citizenship so they can continue to lead and build their futures here.Pathways to Legal Status: We must establish fair and clear pathways to citizenship for undocumented members of our community. Everyone deserves the freedom to learn, work, and thrive without the constant threat of deportation.Due Process: No one should lose their future because they couldn't afford a lawyer. I support ensuring that everyone has access to legal counsel in immigration proceedings.Strong Unions Make Strong CommunitiesUtah’s workforce is the backbone of our economy. To raise wages and ensure every worker is treated with dignity, we must prioritize strong labor protections and invest in the people who build our communities.Restoring Labor Power$20 Minimum Wage: Raise the federal minimum wage to $20 per hour and index it to inflation so full-time work provides real economic security.Responsible Pay Ratios: Cap excessive executive-to-worker pay ratios by applying incremental corporate tax increases to companies so incentives reward shared success and long-term investment in the workforce. If a CEO makes 500 times more than their median employee, that company should contribute more back to the society that makes their success possible.Pass the PRO Act: I support the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act to empower workers, streamline the path to unionization, and hold employers accountable for union-busting.Repeal "Right-to-Work" Laws: I will fight to overturn so-called "right-to-work" laws that exist only to undermine labor standards, weaken unions, and keep wages low.Worker-First Protections: We must strengthen collective bargaining rights across the state to ensure that prosperity is shared by those who create it.Public Dollars for Local JobsI believe that public investment should create high-quality, local careers. I support Project Labor Agreements (PLAs) and prevailing wage laws to ensure all large-scale projects:Pay Fair, Living Wages: Guaranteeing that construction and infrastructure projects invest in skilled local workers and provide family-sustaining pay.Uphold Safety Standards: Ensuring every job site meets the highest safety requirements to protect our workforce.Protect Union-Led Apprenticeships: Supporting the "gold standard" of workforce development. Union apprenticeships provide debt-free, world-class training that prepares Utahns for lifelong careers.Pass the Equality ActWe will fight to pass the Equality Act, providing nationwide civil rights protections for all people regardless of their race, religion, national origin, disability, sex, or LGBTQ+ identity. This landmark legislation ensures that every American is treated with dignity where they live, work, and seek care:Healthcare Access: Prohibits hospitals and clinics from discriminating against patients, ensuring everyone receives unbiased medical care.Retail & Services: Expands federal law to cover stores, banks, and accountants, meaning you cannot be denied service or harassed in the marketplace.Economic Security: Protects people in housing and lending to ensure the "American Dream" is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background.Federally Funded Programs: Guarantees that any program using tax dollars, such as shelters or job training, must serve all community members equally.— Liban Mohamed's campaign website (April 28, 2026)Mohamed's campaign website stated the following:The PlatformPeople In, Money OutA healthy democracy rests on the principle that every citizen’s voice carries equal weight.Today, unlimited corporate and PAC spending allows concentrated wealth to drown out the needs of our communities.
