In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Laura started working at the age of 12 to help her family - doing everything from walking beans to working at a chicken processing plant. After graduating from high school, she became the first in her family to earn a college degree. She received a BA in Political Science with honors from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. She was then awarded the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, which allowed her to pursue a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the University of Michigan with a focus on International Economics. She graduated from Michigan with a job offer from the Federal Reserve Bank.

Following her time at the Federal Reserve, she moved to Atlanta and served as a corporate executive at various Atlanta-based companies. She was a senior negotiator working on deals worth up to $50 million in IT infrastructure and data products. She took time out of her corporate career to start a small business as the Georgia Area Developer for a national wine franchise, opening their Georgia flagship store and helping other small business owners get off the ground.

She currently serves as the Founder and Executive Director of Arte GA, a nonprofit that supports Latino professional creatives. Arte GA is the second nonprofit Laura has launched. Laura has served on a number of nonprofit boards in various capacities and has supported many nonprofits as a volunteer and donor. She is a member of the 2014 Leadership Atlanta Class and was named one of the 50 most influential Latinos in Georgia in 2018.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Better Healthcare for all Georgians

Families are bearing the brunt of a failed healthcare system, as evidenced by our high infant mortality rate, more than half of Georgia's rural counties lacking a pediatrician, and nearly a dozen hospital closures across the state in the last decade. All of this has strained our healthcare system and saddled Georgians with increased costs.

Georgia has one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country. No woman or healthcare professional should ever face criminal prosecution for providing necessary medical care, and no woman should risk dying because she is denied the healthcare she requires.Strengthening Georgia’s Economy

Georgia's economy needs to work for Georgia families, and many are struggling to find affordable housing, childcare, eldercare, insurance, and jobs that pay a living wage.

We must find solutions that support our state's business infrastructure — like expanded public transportation, incentives for small businesses, a prepared workforce — while ensuring Georgia is a great place to raise a family. If we don't take care of Georgia families, businesses in our state will eventually suffer.

As a former corporate executive and small business owner, I know we don't have to choose between supporting Georgia's business environment and investing in our families. We can do both.Protecting Our Democracy

Voting rights are critical to a functioning democracy, and recently we have seen a number of voter suppression efforts emanating from the Georgia Capitol. I will work to remove barriers to the ballot box and ensure all Georgia citizens can exercise their constitutional right to vote.

Gerrymandered districts dilute our voice. The voters should elect their representatives — not the other way around. I will work to establish fair districts.

The Federal government is building ICE detention centers in Georgia without the input of any state or local officials — without the input of the people of Georgia. I will work to stop government overreach.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

The economy, access to quality healthcare, democratic rights, quality education for all, women's reproductive rights, fair districts, and safe storage gun laws.
