In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

My name is Laura Johnson and I am a proud resident of Olathe and District 26. I was raised by two teachers who taught me to look around and find where you can do the most good. In my 20s, that led me to working in childcare, catering service, and most recently to a role as an administrative assistant to accountants. But since moving to Kansas, I was inspired by the individuals who were serving in local government. Some of the most important government work for our day to day lives, such as education, affordability, and voting rights, happens locally and at the state level. After volunteering with local organizations to get out the vote, this year I looked around and felt I could do the most good by offering my service to our community here in District 26.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

I want to ensure the legislature fulfills its responsibility to fully fund public education. Kansas children deserve every resource to build their future. Beyond that, we need to provide necessary support for our teachers and support staff who are investing daily in our children. Our district is growing! District 26 is attracting new families and I want to do what I can to help create more access to affordable healthcare and housing. With affordable healthcare, more Kansans can access preventative care which lowers costs and wait times for everyone. With more affordable housing, we can ensure that young people can stay in the area if they wish, and grandparents can live within an hour of their grandchildren.I want us to invest in sustainable growth. Our district has attracted bids from companies who wish to build data centers in the area. While we should welcome growth in the area, we need to make sure we are doing it sustainably. I want to work with other legislators to ensure that we are welcoming companies who will invest back in the community and maintain our local resources responsibly. There must be robust, local accountability for any project that harms the community.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am most passionate about education policy and protecting voting rights.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I believe honesty and transparency are vital for an elected official. Constituents should be aware of what goes on in Topeka.
