In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
I am a writer, musician, and retired teacher who lives in Fairlee with my wife, three dogs, and a cat. I raised four children in Fairlee. I have a lifetime of community service to draw upon to serve the residents of West Fairlee, Bradford, and Fairlee. I served as a coach at the youth and varsity levels in Fairlee and at Rivendell Academy, as a Cub Scout leader, and as a member of various boards, including a stint on the Mentoring Project of the Upper Valley Board of Directors. I am currently the Vice-Chair of the Fairlee Selectboard and I have served on the Fairlee Cemetery Commission for over 30 years.
After a 20 year carpentry career, I returned to college to become a teacher. I taught at Rivendell Academy, Connecticut River Academy, and at Oxbow High School before settling into an 18 year career at River Bend Career & Technical Center in Bradford, teaching 9th and 10th grade English and 11th and 12th grade Construction Technology.
During my teaching career I also served as a building rep, negotiator, and President of Orange East Education Association (OEEA), the local educator union. I also served on the Vermont-NEA Board of Directors (VT-NEA) and I currently represent VT-NEA on the Vermont Educatior Health Initiative Board of Directors, designing health insurance plans for most Vermont educators.
My life experience has given me the ability to work with people with different philisophical positions to find common sense solutions to complex problems.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Living in Vermont has become increasingly unaffordable for working class Vermonters. We need to find ways to reduce the overall tax burden on the people who live here. I'm ready to work to find innovative ways to do that.Health care has become increasingly unaffordable for Vermonters. The legislature has started taking steps to reduce the cost of health care and thus, health insurance, and I am ready to continue that work. All Vermonters should have access to affordable health insurance. The manner in which we fund education puts the vast majority of the burden on property owners. As property values have risen, so has that burden. I am ready to work to find a different way to fund education that will be more equitable and take some of the burden off Vermont property owners.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
Making Vermont more affordable for working class Vermonters, protecting Vermonts natural resources through sustainable management, day care, education and health care.
