In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I'm Kris Williams, candidate for Iowa House District 8. I live about a mile west of Fort Dodge. Before I turned 18, I moved over 30 times, spent time in foster care, and by 16, I was helping buy groceries for my family. After the Tyson plant closed, my mom worked 2-3 jobs and still couldn't make ends meet. I know what it's like to choose between a bill and groceries, worrying if the car will start in the snow.

I'm running because both parties have failed working people. Politicians take corporate PAC money while our water gets worse, schools lose funding, and families can't afford healthcare. I don't take a dime from corporations. I'm proud to be endorsed by the Iowa AFL-CIO, Run for Something, Iowa Progressive Democrats of America, On Tha Ground Foundation, and local leaders like Niki Conrad.

I believe in putting people over profit - every time. That means clean tap water, fully funded public schools, affordable healthcare, and a wage that actually covers rent and groceries. It's not radical. It's neighbors taking care of each other.

I'm a first-time candidate, and my campaign is grassroots: door-knocking, listening sessions, and mutual aid. I believe you don't earn trust with mailers, you earn it by showing up. Let's build a Webster County where no one is left behind.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Clean Water – I believe you and your children should be able to drink from the tap.

Iowa has one of the worst cancer rates in the nation, and it's getting worse. The cause? Industrial agriculture runoff – excess pesticides and fertilizer from corn and soybean fields – plus CAFOs and coal plants.

CAFOs crowd large farm animals like cattle and hogs into buildings, collect their manure for fertilizer, and that manure often leaks or spills. Coal plants have documented runoff residue. All of it ends up in our drinking water: nitrates, forever chemicals (PFAS and PFOS), and microplastics.

Large corporations need to be held accountable for poisoning our water.Fair Taxes - Iowa has a $1.4 billion deficit. This is the cost of over a decade of tax cuts to the wealthiest of Iowans (like those making $500k/yr) and corporations.

When republicans debate which public services to cut - Head Start, water quality measures, rural fire departments, or food assistance - I demand we stop hurting Iowans for the richest among us.

You pay more in taxes on your wages than they do. It's time to flip the script.People Over Profit – that's it.

This is a core fundamental belief as an Iowan. Whether it's funding kids instead of vouchers, or fighting price gouging at the grocery store or the hospital, I believe in this simple principle.

Government is meant to protect people from predatory corporations – including small businesses – and to take a confrontational role toward any corporation that puts profit before the well‑being of people.

This means: living wages, adaptation to the climate crisis, immigration reform, affordable homes, public transit (including rail), and passing a law that strips Citizens United of its ability to allow corporations to bribe politicians. I believe this is common sense and the only sustainable way forward.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I'm most passionate about clean water, fair taxes, and putting people over profit. Clean water, because this should be a basic right. Fair taxes because our $1.4 billion deficit was created by tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations - while working families struggle, we know trickle-down economics does not work. And people over profit because the government should protect everyday Iowans from price gouging at the grocery store and the hospital, and from corporations that poison our water and our democracy. These aren't separate issues - they're all about who the government works for.
