Kevin’s public service started early. At the age of 19, he joined the United States Air Force. After Basic Training and Tech School, he married his wife Donna and promptly was relocated to England. While stationed in England, Kevin was deployed to the middle east for Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm. After returning to England, he received follow-on orders to Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada. While stationed at Nellis, Kevin began working on a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1996, and spent the next two years finishing his degree at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
After graduation, Kevin went to work for an Arizona utility and was transferred to Mesa, Arizona. He spent 17 years in various departments, including Engineering and Government Relations. After seeing the good and bad of politics, Kevin decided to run for City Council in Mesa. In August 2014, Kevin was elected to his first term as a Councilmember. He was re-elected in 2018 and is currently in his final year on Council.
Government’s first priority is to protect it’s citizens. I want to bring that same spirit to the Corporation Commission. We need responsible leaders that are willing to protect the consumers, protect the businesses, and ensure Arizona always maintains a reliable energy grid. We need to push back against California style energy policies and Green New Deal style policies that are trying to find their way into Arizona.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
Keep California-style and Green New Deal policies out of Arizona.Ensure Arizona has a reliable and resilient energy infrastructure.Eliminate mandates and subsidies that are driving our rates.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I would like to see the policy making placed into the legislature where it belongs, with the Corporation Commission being the expert witness on energy issues. The Commission is comprised of five Commissioners, so only three are needed for a majority. Three people should not be setting energy policy for the entire state. The legislature will also make it possible for rural communities to have a greater voice.
What qualities does this office possess that makes it a unique and important part of the state government and legal system?
The Corporation Commission is a semi executive regulatory agency in the state government that is comprised of five elected members. The Corporation Commission regulates all non-municipal utilities in Arizona and approves rules and regulations involving those utilities. The Commission is also responsible for incorporating businesses and organizations, regulating securities, and ensuring the safety of railroads and pipelines.
What responsibilities of this office do you personally consider the most important?
The regulation and rate setting of the non-municipalities are, in my opinion, the most important function of the Commission since that directly impacts Arizona consumers every single month when they go to pay their utility bills.
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
Again, since this office regulates and sets the utility rates for the non-municipal utilities, it is one of the most underrated and unknown offices that every single consumer should be aware of.
Do you believe that it's beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
Not necessarily. I think the more important quality is experience in the utility arena. Commissioners are making decisions that not only impact consumers, but also can have a significant impact on the utilities ability to maintain a reliable and resilient grid to ensure Arizona's consumers have uninterrupted service at the lowest cost possible.

Thompson’s campaign website stated the following:
Why I'm running.....
I have always felt that Government today does not truly represent the people. For the past eight years as an elected official, I have fought for the citizens of Mesa. Now I want to use my experience to represent the citizens of Arizona to ensure the consumers are protected and our energy grids remain reliable. As an America First and Arizona First Candidate, my positions are to...
Eliminate Mandates and Subsidies
Mandates and Subsidies are driving up our rates
Put policy making into the Legislature where it belongs
A simple majority of three Commissioners should not be making energy policy for the entire State
The Legislature will provide rural communities a voice they don't currently have.
Clear regulation for new Energy technologies to come to Arizona
New technologies like Micro- Nuclear.
My running mate for the second open Corporation Commission seat is Nick Myers.[5]
