In their own words

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

I am Kermit Thomas, a pastor, community advocate, Army Major, and candidate for Illinois State Representative in District 71. I currently serve as a leader in my community through my church and organizations such as the NAACP and local youth initiatives. My life’s work has been centered around serving people—supporting families, mentoring youth, advocating for veterans, and helping communities grow stronger together.

As a Major in the United States Army, I have led with discipline, accountability, and a commitment to service—values that continue to guide my work in the community today. That experience has given me a deep understanding of leadership, teamwork, and what it means to put people first.

I understand the needs of District 71 because I’ve spent years working directly with people across both rural and urban areas. I’m running to bring empathy, accountability, and practical solutions to Springfield that reflect the real experiences of the people I serve.

Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?

Empathy in Leadership

This campaign is about leadership that listens and understands. I have spent my life working directly with families, youth, veterans, and working people, and I understand the real challenges facing our communities. From rising healthcare costs to economic struggles in both rural towns and urban neighborhoods, people deserve a representative who sees them, hears them, and fights for them. I will bring a voice to Springfield that reflects the lived experiences of the people in District 71.Actionable Solutions That Deliver Results

We don’t just need ideas—we need solutions that work. I am committed to advancing practical policies that improve education, expand access to healthcare, support veterans, and strengthen our local economies. Whether it’s helping farmers navigate economic pressures or ensuring working families have access to affordable care, I will focus on results that make a measurable difference in people’s lives.Bridging Rural and Urban Communities

District 71 is unique because it includes both rural and urban communities, and too often those voices are divided. I am committed to bringing people together and ensuring that every part of our district is represented fairly. Our farmers, small business owners, students, and families all deserve attention and investment. My campaign is focused on unity—making sure no community is overlooked.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am deeply passionate about education, healthcare, veterans’ services, and economic development. As a youth advocate, I believe education is the foundation for opportunity, and we must invest in our schools and workforce development programs. Healthcare is personal to me, and I believe no one should suffer unnecessarily due to lack of access or affordability. I am also committed to supporting our veterans, particularly addressing homelessness and access to services. Finally, I am focused on strengthening local economies across both rural and urban areas by supporting small businesses, agriculture, and job creation.

What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?

Our campaign is actively working to secure endorsements from local leaders, community organizations, and Democratic groups across District 71. We are building strong relationships throughout the district and look forward to announcing endorsements as they are finalized.
