In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Keenen Colbert and I am the democratic nominee for Senator of District 2. I am running because I firmly believe that Texans, as well as America as a whole, deserve far better representation from our government than what is being offered. I intend to change that through continuous engagement with constituents (before AND after I am elected) as well as leading by example. Full disclosure: I am not rich, I am not related to, or associated with, any VIP’s, and I am not backed by wealthy lobbyist (nor do I intend to be). What I am, however, is tired. I’m tired of seeing elected officials serve themselves through corrupt practices. I’m tired of watching politicians at all levels dodge accountability when they fail to deliver on promises or lack moral integrity. I’m tired of seeing officials fail to engage with, represent, or serve their constituents. I’m also someone that intends to do something about this blatant failure of leadership by replacing them. Through continuous engagement, I intend to serve constituents of district 2, whether they support me or not. I intend to exemplify a servant based, unifying example of leadership that offers constituents better representation, promotes engagement in our democratic process, and most importantly, serves the people..
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK IN THE INTERESTS OF THEIR CONSTITUENTS. Representing a community requires CONTINUOUS engagement after being elected, not just before. Both throughout my campaign and after I am elected, I intend to remain engaged with, and accessible to, constituents in order to accurately champion their interest; whether they support me or not. I see the conditions that our current representation has set for us to be, in many cases, a complete failure. Regardless of political affiliation, I believe that healthcare should be affordable, public schools should be properly funded, and the cost of living should have a symbiotic relationship with wages.I fundamentally believe that encouraging people to participate in our democratic process, as well as giving them the information/ tools that they need to make an informed decision at the ballot is FAR MORE IMPORTANT than convincing people to vote for one party or another. Let me be perfectly clear, I WANT YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR DEMOCRATIC PROCESS and make INFORMED decisions that truly support your societal interests. When people know better, people do better. I believe that far too many people are either uniformed, misinformed, or disengaged with our democratic process due to a lack of faith in our system. I intend the change that through education, accountability and transparency towards constituents, and continuous engagement.TEXAS DESERVES BETTER. Regardless of political affiliation, I believe that Texas deserves better legislation than what it has received and better representation than what is currently offered. Nominees, candidates, and sitting officials at all levels need to encourage engagement in our democratic process so that we have the best elected officials, equipped with the most information, that are ready to accurately represent the interests of their constituents. Let me be clear, THE CURRENT STATUS QUO IS UNACCEPTABLE. I intend to change that by leading through example, continuously engaging with constituents, and focusing on ways to better enrich people’s lives.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
In no particular order, I am passionate about public school funding, affordable healthcare (particularly in rural areas), and the cost of housing/ living in relation to wages. I am also deeply passionate about implementing policies to fight corruption in our democratic process (I.e. limiting campaign donations, banning lobbyist, etc.). Holding office is not just a privilege but a duty to constituents. I do not see how it is possible to properly represent and serve constituents when one is significantly influenced by money or favors to serve themselves or certain groups. Public office should be held with integrity and honor. I believe that our government should further legislate representatives to conduct themselves accordingly.
