In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Katie Robins is 29 years old, a mother, and a nurse. She lives in Marion, Indiana and graduated from the School of Nursing at Indiana University Kokomo in 2019. Katie started her nursing career in the ICU right at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, she saw firsthand how the systems put in place by the government work, and how often those systems fall short. Katie is running to be the next Representative in Indiana House District 31 to fight for the working-class Hoosiers that keep this community running. After two decades of single party rule in the state of Indiana, it’s time for serious change.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
You and your family deserve housing that is safe and affordable. Hoosiers are struggling to pay their rent/mortgage as costs rise, but wages aren’t keeping up, and corporate investors are gobbling up available homes, driving up prices. Your property taxes contribute to the well-being of your community, and they deserve to be responsibly invested. Republicans promised a property tax overhaul, but all they delivered were tax cuts for big business at the expense of families, schools, and our local governments. Utility costs are skyrocketing as politicians approve rate hikes and data centers, allowing companies to pass their costs onto you while their profits soar. Buying a piece of the American Dream shouldn’t be so far out of reach. You and your family deserve affordable and accessible healthcare that puts you first. But too often, long wait times, expensive bills, and lack of coverage keep people from going to the doctor. Insurance companies shouldn't play the middleman and dictate what kind of healthcare we can have, and neither should politicians. Healthcare is a deeply personal matter, and you deserve privacy in your medical choices. But instead of empowering people to make the best decision for themselves, politicians are too focused on dictating other people’s choices or making people jump through hoops to qualify for healthcare. It shouldn’t be controversial - keeping people healthy, and making sure that being healthy doesn’t cost too much, is good for Indiana.Your children and our community deserve strong, fully funded public schools. They’re a community investment and critical infrastructure. But Republicans are destabilizing them by funneling billions of our public tax dollars to religious private schools and privately managed charter schools, which don’t have the same oversight or local elected school board. On top of that, Republicans recently passed property tax reform that gave big tax cuts to businesses at the expense of our public schools. This decision is forcing schools within our district to close or consolidate. These are devastating losses that destabilize communities, reduce property values, and decrease local jobs in addition to disrupting students’ education.
