In their own words
Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
Hi, I’m Kate Gallup and I’m running for MI State Senate to bring affordability and people-first leadership to Northern Michigan. I have a background in engineering, education, and public service, and am fighting to get money out of politics, strengthen democracy, guarantee equal protection under the law, and care for Michigan’s land, water, and these communities I love. It is time for everyone to have healthcare access, a home they can afford, for workers to be paid a fair wage and the wealthy to pay their fair share, for every child to have a good and safe education and for the issues of data centers and environmental care to be addressed.
Please list below 3 key messages of your campaign. What are the main points you want voters to remember about your goals for your time in office?
By getting Money out of Politics, we can push back on utility rate hikes and healthcare costs. That is why I collected hundreds of signatures for this ballot initiative over the past year. I want to make sure we have government accountability and put people first. I also think we need to make sure that people are represented over special interests. Money out of Politics can help us ensure safe and fully funded schools, fair wages, good roads, and for corporate entities to pay their fair share. From Empire in Leelanau to Sault Ste. Marie in Chippewa, District 37 sits along 3 Great Lakes and is filled with forests and farmland. We need to make sure that we protect our beautiful environment and balance the need for thriving business and expanded housing so that all may afford to live and enjoy our area. Let's be forward looking to ensure we find that balance for generations to come. We need to enact good frameworks to make sure data centers don't decrease hunting ability and nature enjoyment on people's lands due to noise, pollute the water or drive up utility costs.Everyone deserves access to healthcare, and it shouldn't break the bank. Let's pass MICare so that all Michiganders have coverage regardless of work status, age or health. Mental health should also be covered on parity with physical health.
What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?
I'm passionate about many areas and have been an advocate in the space of advancing innovation, LGBTQ+ equality, women's equality and healthcare, addressing climate change and green energy, animal care and rights, getting money out of politics, patent reform, healthcare for all, gun safety, environmental care, worker rights, the power of collective bargaining, education that works for every child, and generally making sure we have strong communities that allow people to live dignified lives.
What organizations or individuals have endorsed your campaign?
314 Action, Leelanau Dems, Planned Parenthood.
