Who are you? Tell us about yourself.
My name is Justin J. Maldonado, and I am an Independent candidate for the United States Senate representing the great State of New Jersey.
I come from a background rooted in public service, leadership, and hard work. Throughout my career, I have worked in executive leadership roles within the hospitality and business industries, overseeing operations, managing teams, and solving complex challenges that directly impact working families and local communities. I am also a former member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, where I learned the importance of discipline, service, accountability, and putting others before yourself.
Like many New Jersey residents, I have witnessed firsthand the struggles facing our state — rising costs of living, concerns about public safety, political division, failing infrastructure, and a government that too often prioritizes politics over people. I decided to run for the United States Senate because I believe New Jersey deserves independent leadership that listens to the people, respects freedom, and fights for real solutions.
My campaign is focused on restoring accountability in government, supporting law enforcement and first responders, protecting freedom of speech, defending veterans, strengthening our economy, and ensuring that hardworking families have a voice in Washington.
I am not a career politician. I am someone who believes leadership means standing up for the people even when it is difficult. This campaign is about bringing

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?
I look up to leaders who demonstrated courage, resilience, service, and a willingness to stand firm in their convictions during difficult times. I have always respected individuals who put the interests of the people and the country above politics, personal gain, or public pressure.
I especially admire leaders who are willing to challenge the status quo, speak directly to the people, and fight for accountability and transparency in government. I also deeply respect members of our military, first responders, and public servants who dedicate their lives to protecting others and serving their communities with honor.
As a former member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, I learned the importance of discipline, teamwork, responsibility, and service to others. Those values continue to shape my leadership style and my commitment to public service.
I also draw inspiration from everyday hardworking Americans — small business owners, workers, parents, veterans, nurses, and community leaders — who continue to persevere despite economic challenges and political division. Their determination and resilience remind me why leadership matters and why government should always work in the best interest of the people.
The example I strive to follow is one of integrity, courage, and service: listening to the people, standing up for what is right, and remaining committed to improving the lives of others through honest leadership and meaningful action.
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
The most important characteristics of an elected official are integrity, accountability, transparency, leadership, and the willingness to put the people above politics.
An elected official should always remember that public office is a position of service — not power, privilege, or personal gain. The people deserve leaders who are honest, accessible, and willing to listen to the concerns of everyday citizens, regardless of political affiliation.
Strong leadership also requires courage: the courage to make difficult decisions, stand up for what is right, defend constitutional freedoms, and remain committed to the truth even under pressure. Accountability is critical because elected officials must answer to the people they represent, not political insiders or special interests.
I also believe compassion and common sense are essential. Leaders should understand the real struggles families face every day, including rising costs, public safety concerns, education challenges, and economic uncertainty. Government should work to create opportunities, protect communities, and improve quality of life for all residents.
Most importantly, elected officials should lead by example through professionalism, respect, and unity. Our country and our state move forward when leaders focus on solving problems instead of creating division.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
I believe the core responsibility of a United States Senator is to serve and protect the interests of the people they represent with honesty, accountability, and independence.
A Senator should fight for policies that improve the lives of working families, strengthen the economy, protect public safety, support veterans and first responders, and preserve the constitutional rights and freedoms of every American. The role is not about political status or personal recognition — it is about public service and delivering real results.
One of the most important responsibilities is ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used responsibly and that government remains transparent and accountable to the people. Senators must also carefully review legislation, challenge wasteful spending, and advocate for solutions that help communities grow and succeed.
A United States Senator should also work to strengthen national security, improve infrastructure, support education and job creation, and ensure that federal agencies operate fairly and effectively. Equally important is maintaining open communication with constituents and being accessible to the people, not disconnected from them.
Most importantly, elected officials must have the courage to stand up for what is right — even when it is politically difficult. Leadership requires integrity, common sense, and a commitment to putting the people first above party politics or special interests.
What legacy would you like to leave?
The legacy I would like to leave is one of service, integrity, courage, and positive change for the people of New Jersey and the United States.
I want to be remembered as someone who stood up for everyday Americans, spoke honestly, listened to the concerns of the people, and fought for solutions instead of political division. Too often, politics has become focused on power, headlines, and party agendas rather than the real struggles families face every day. I want my legacy to reflect leadership that put people first.
I hope to leave behind a legacy of accountability in government, stronger communities, support for law enforcement and first responders, respect for veterans, protection of constitutional freedoms, and expanded opportunities for working families and future generations.
Most importantly, I want people to know that I remained true to my principles, even during difficult moments. Leadership is not about personal recognition — it is about making a meaningful difference and inspiring others to believe that their voices matter.
If I can help restore trust in leadership, encourage unity over division, and motivate others to serve their communities with integrity and compassion, then I would consider that a legacy worth leaving behind.
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
One of my first jobs was working in the hospitality industry, an experience that taught me the value of hard work, professionalism, customer service, and leadership at an early stage in my career. I spent several years learning the operational side of business, interacting directly with guests, managing challenges in fast-paced environments, and understanding how teamwork impacts success.
That experience helped shape my work ethic and gave me firsthand insight into the struggles and responsibilities faced by working Americans every day. It also taught me the importance of communication, accountability, and treating people with respect regardless of their background or position.
Over time, those early experiences allowed me to grow into leadership and executive management roles, where I learned how to oversee operations, support employees, solve problems under pressure, and make decisions that directly affected both businesses and communities.
I believe those experiences are important because effective leadership comes from understanding people, working through challenges firsthand, and never forgetting where you started.
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Like many people, I have faced personal and professional challenges throughout my life that tested my resilience, patience, and character. One of the greatest struggles has been navigating difficult situations while continuing to move forward with determination and maintaining faith in myself and my purpose.
There have been moments where I faced adversity, setbacks, criticism, and obstacles that could have easily caused me to give up. However, those experiences taught me the importance of perseverance, accountability, discipline, and staying focused during difficult times. I learned that true character is built not during moments of comfort, but during moments of hardship.
Another challenge has been balancing leadership responsibilities, professional demands, and personal pressures while continuing to serve others and remain committed to improving my community. Leadership often requires making difficult decisions, accepting criticism, and continuing forward even when the path is uncertain.
Despite those struggles, I believe adversity creates strength and perspective. It has helped me better understand the challenges everyday Americans face, including financial stress, uncertainty, and the feeling of not always being heard by those in positions of power.
Those experiences are part of what motivates me to fight for accountability, opportunity, fairness, and stronger leadership for the people of New Jersey.
What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
I believe the United States faces several major challenges over the next decade, including economic stability, political division, public safety, national security, rising costs of living, and restoring trust in government institutions.
Many hardworking Americans are struggling with inflation, housing costs, healthcare expenses, and financial uncertainty. Strengthening the economy and creating opportunities for working families and small businesses must remain a top priority. At the same time, we must address infrastructure, energy policy, education, and workforce development to ensure the country remains competitive and prepared for the future.
Another major challenge is the growing political and social division within the country. Americans have become increasingly divided by ideology, media influence, and partisan conflict. I believe leaders must focus on unity, respectful dialogue, and practical solutions rather than encouraging division for political gain.
National security and public safety will also continue to be critical concerns. The United States must remain prepared to address threats involving terrorism, cyberattacks, border security, and international instability while continuing to support law enforcement and first responders who protect our communities every day.
Perhaps most importantly, the country faces a crisis of trust in leadership and institutions. Many Americans feel disconnected from government and believe their voices are no longer being heard. Restoring accountability, transparency, and confidence in leadership will be essential to strengthening the nation moving forward.
I believe America’s greatest strength has always been its people, and by focusing on unity, opportunity, responsibility, and common sense leadership, the country can overcome these challenges and continue moving forward.
What qualities does the U.S. Senate possess that makes it unique as an institution?
The United States Senate is unique because it was designed to be a deliberative and stabilizing institution within our government. Unlike many other political bodies, the Senate plays a critical role in balancing power, protecting the interests of the states, and ensuring that major national decisions receive careful consideration.
One of the Senate’s most important qualities is its responsibility to provide oversight and accountability. Senators are tasked with reviewing legislation, confirming federal judges and executive appointments, ratifying treaties, and serving as a check on the executive branch. These responsibilities require serious judgment, independence, and a long-term perspective focused on the future of the country.
The Senate is also unique because each state receives equal representation regardless of population size. This structure ensures that smaller states still have a meaningful voice in national decisions and helps preserve the balance between state and federal interests.
Another defining quality of the Senate is its tradition of debate and bipartisan negotiation. While political disagreements are inevitable, the Senate was intended to encourage discussion, compromise, and thoughtful policymaking rather than rushed decision-making driven purely by political pressure.
Most importantly, the Senate carries a tremendous responsibility to represent the people with integrity and professionalism. The institution works best when Senators place the interests of the nation and the Constitution above party politics, special interests, or personal ambition.
Do you believe that compromise is necessary or desirable for policymaking?
Yes, I believe compromise is both necessary and desirable in policymaking — as long as it does not require abandoning core principles, constitutional rights, or the best interests of the people.
The United States was built on a system that encourages debate, discussion, and negotiation. In a diverse nation with different perspectives and experiences, effective leadership requires the ability to listen, communicate, and work toward practical solutions that benefit the country as a whole.
Compromise should never mean weakness or surrendering values. Instead, it should reflect maturity, professionalism, and a willingness to find common ground where possible. The American people expect leaders to solve problems, not create constant division or political gridlock.
At the same time, there are certain issues where leaders must remain firm, especially when it comes to protecting constitutional freedoms, public safety, national security, and government accountability. Strong leadership means understanding when cooperation is appropriate and when principles must be defended without hesitation.
I believe the best policymaking happens when leaders can disagree respectfully, focus on facts and solutions, and prioritize the needs of the people above party politics or personal agendas. The goal should always be progress, stability, and improving the lives of Americans.
What was the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember?
One of the first major historical events I remember during my lifetime was the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States. Like millions of Americans, I remember the shock, fear, sadness, and unity that followed that tragic day.
What stood out most to me was how the country came together during a time of crisis. Americans from all backgrounds stood united in support of one another, our first responders, and the families who suffered unimaginable loss. The bravery displayed by law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency personnel, military members, and ordinary citizens left a lasting impression on me.
That moment also reinforced the importance of national security, public service, resilience, and patriotism. It showed how quickly life can change and how critical leadership, preparedness, and unity are during difficult times.
The events of September 11th shaped an entire generation and continue to influence how many Americans view service, sacrifice, and the responsibility we all share to protect and strengthen our communities and our country.

What do you perceive to be the United States' greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Several significant challenges face the United States over the next decade, shaping its social, economic, and political landscape. Here are some of the most pressing:
1.
Climate Change: Addressing the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and environmental degradation, requires robust mitigation and adaptation strategies at local, national, and global levels.
2.
Income Inequality: The widening gap between the rich and the poor poses a threat to social cohesion and economic stability. Addressing income inequality involves implementing policies to promote equitable access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
3.
Healthcare Access: Ensuring affordable and accessible healthcare for all Americans remains a persistent challenge. Reforms are needed to improve healthcare delivery, control costs, and expand coverage to underserved populations.
4.
Racial Injustice: Systemic racism and inequities continue to undermine the principles of equality and justice. Efforts to address racial injustice require comprehensive reforms in criminal justice, education, healthcare, and economic policy.
5.
Political Polarization: Increasing polarization and division in American politics hinder effective governance and compromise. Rebuilding trust in democratic institutions and fostering constructive dialogue across ideological divides are essential for addressing national challenges.
6.

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
1.
Limited Time for Legislative Work: Two-year terms may limit the amount of time representatives have to focus on legislative work and policy priorities, as they must balance legislative duties with the demands of campaigning and fundraising for re-election.
2.
Short-Term Decision Making: The frequent turnover resulting from two-year terms may encourage representatives to prioritize short-term political considerations over long-term policy solutions. This can hinder the ability to address complex and enduring challenges facing the nation.
3.
Influence of Special Interests: Representatives may feel pressure to prioritize the interests of special interest groups and donors who can provide financial support for their re-election campaigns, potentially compromising their independence and the integrity of the legislative process.
4.
Higher Campaign Costs: Two-year terms contribute to the perpetual campaign cycle, requiring representatives to devote significant time and resources to fundraising and campaigning, which can distract from their legislative duties and exacerbate concerns about the influence of money in politics.
In conclusion, the question of whether two years is the right term length for representatives involves trade-offs between responsiveness to constituents and the ability to focus on long-term policy goals. While shorter terms can promote accountability and responsiveness, they also present challenges related to legislative effectiveness and the influence of special⬤
What are your thoughts on term limits?
Term limits, which restrict the number of terms an elected official can serve in office, are a topic of debate in political discourse. Here are some perspectives on term limits:
Arguments in Favor of Term Limits:**
1. **Promote Fresh Ideas and Leadership:** Term limits can prevent entrenched incumbents from monopolizing political power and encourage the emergence of new leaders with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas.
2. **Prevent Career Politicians:** Term limits help prevent the formation of a professional political class by encouraging turnover in elected offices and limiting the influence of career politicians who may become disconnected from the concerns of their constituents.
3. **Encourage Accountability and Competition:** Term limits create regular opportunities for competitive elections, as incumbents are not guaranteed indefinite tenure. This can foster greater accountability among elected officials, who must continually earn the support of voters to remain in office.
4. **Reduce Corruption and Entrenchment:** Lon
